The burnt offering was given with salt: For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Romans 12:1 The table that we eat from represents an altar unto the God of Israel. He requires that salt be upon his table. Salt alone on a table can represent a covenant with the other party.
