Yom Teruah is known as the Day of the Awakening blast. What is the purpose of this “Awakening blast”, the blowing of the shofar? To awaken people from their spiritual slumber. To warn them to repent, as we are in the season of judgment. The sounding of the shofar is meant to arouse those who have fallen asleep spiritually.
