Steve Woodberry was born in Wichita, Kansas, attending Wichita South High School before playing for the University of Kansas where he was a part of two Final Four teams at Kansas in 1991 and 1993. In 1994 Woodberry won a championship in the Swiss league with Belinzona before signing a deal to play in Australia with the Gold Coast Rollers in 1995. In his first season in Australia, Woodberry averaged 24.5 points, 7.4 assists and 7.6 rebounds per game. Before suffering an injury at training, forcing him to return to Kansas. Woodberry would return to Australia the following year to play for the Brisbane Bullets. It was here he played the best basketball of his career, earning a spot on the All-NBL First Team in 1998 and 1999. Woodberry would win league MVP in 1999 before agreeing to play for the Sydney Kings in 2000.
