Zechariah returned to Jerusalem within a year of the decree of Cyrus. God used him to encourage those charged with rebuilding the Temple. In so doing, God used him to give Israel a prophetic glimpse of the atoning work of the coming Messiah and a prophetic vision of a New Covenant ‘Jerusalem’. Zechariah the prophet foretold of the One in whom the hopes of Israel rested. Eventually Jerusalem's religious leaders turned on Zechariah, and martyred Him in the Temple (Matt. 23:35).
