Zechariah returned to Jerusalem within a year of the decree of Cyrus. God used him to encourage those charged with rebuilding the Temple. In so doing, God used him to give Israel a prophetic glimpse of the atoning work of the coming Messiah and a prophetic vision of a New Covenant ‘Jerusalem’. Eventually Jerusalem's religious leaders turned on Zechariah, and martyred Him in the Temple (Matt. 23:35).
