Several times last week, someone would ask me what the Gospel reading is for this Sunday, and every time I told them, their reaction was, “Oh, yuck, I hate that passage.” Honestly, that was my reaction too. “I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” Come on, Jesus, you’re supposed to be the Prince of Peace, not the Prince of Jerry Springer. I could say that Jesus’ talking about family members being against each other harkens back to Micah 7:6 - “For the son treats the father with contempt, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” Obviously that passage was in Jesus’
