Bridges are impressive examples of the ingenuity of engineering - until something goes wrong. On Nov. 7, 1940, the suspension bridge spanning the Tacoma Narrows collapsed after four months of being open. While nobody was injured, the event has become a textbook example of the importance of taking all factors into account.
