On December 9, 1990, Lech Walesa was elected president of the new government of Poland which replaced the collapsing Soviet Union. His election was the culmination of a long policy of Polish revolution which focused not on parties, mass movements, or even personalities, but on the individual. As Vaclav Havel said: “simply straighten your backbone and live in greater dignity as an individual.”
