Timothy wasn't the only one to get gifts! We're reading 2 Timothy, and it's obvious that young Tim had some gift related to his ministry, imparted by the laying on of Paul's hands. Rest, then rise. Antichrists never win. When a man proclaims himself to be God, he belongs in a mental health facility, not on the throne. But when he rises to a position of power, we can count on two things happening: He'll try to exterminate the Jews, and he will come to a bad end. Where's the beef? If you've been studying the book of Daniel with us, you may have noticed that we took a bite out of chapter 10, and then we nibbled at chapter 12. The wise will shine! Daniel's supernatural visitor burst into poetry in the middle of his message. They deal with prayers, and international affairs. Angels and other supernatural beings are real, and they are really involved in what happens in our world. Daniel saw them. The other time Jesus wept. We remember that the Lord cried in sympathy with the sisters of Lazarus. But Luke records another time that Jesus wept. Don't be alarmed, we're still studying the book of Daniel - specifically the End Times prophecy in Daniel 9. But that investigation has taken us forward in time to Luke 19, and what's known as the Triumphal Entry. We could also call it the "Tearful Entry," because Jesus saw Jerusalem as it would be. No excuses. When we examine the prayer in Daniel, chapter 9, we see confession, submission, petitions ... but no justifications. No excuses. You were right, God. We were wrong. Yet Daniel had a reason for asking for a blessing he didn't deserve. That reason was a promise in the Scriptures. And another reason: the compassion of God. Well. Here we are. We woke up this morning in the Year of Our Lord 2,025. Did you think we would make it? It's a little surprising to me, I have to say. But God isn't surprised. Not fallowing is not following. Judah was taken into exile because of its idolatry, which doesn't surprise us. But there's another reason that God expelled the nation: they refused to follow His instructions for a 7-year sabbath of the farmland. There was more at issue than just nutrient replenishment of the soil. It was a question of who really owns that patch of earth, and whether He can be trusted to provide. "For I know the plans that I have for you...." One of the most comforting promises in the Bible is found in Jeremiah 29: "'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.'" We know the verse, but do we know the context? It's right in the middle of Jeremiah's prophecy of a 70-year exile. Daniel was moved less by the general words of encouragement, and more by the math. God was moving the chess pieces around, to get the King into position! It wasn't just entire human populations that were being shifted; the planetarium had been reprogrammed, as well! "It's all a big accident," they tell us. From you to the universe, it's all just random chance. No plan, no direction, no purpose. They tell us. "Keep Christ in Christmas!" It makes a good bumper sticker. Bumper stickers, wall hangings and slogans aren't long enough to let us fully explain an idea. At best they're provokers of thought.
