Episode 36: The Silent Treatment
22/06/2018 Duración: 11minAre you serious? You are going to ignore me? Not even respond to my calls or e-mails? We rehearsed for 6 months and only had 1 gig and you are just going to walk away, no explanation? I thought we were friends. I trusted you. How could you do this to the group, we all worked so hard! Have you ever sent a text or email similar to that? Or worse...have you received one? Getting upset and going silent is the MOST unprofessional way to handle your problems. Stop being afraid of having grown-up, adult conversations with your fellow performers. Even if it does not work out, have the conversation, communicate the issue. Who cares if you are right or wrong, get over yourself. REMEMBER - register to receive your free copy of my e-book - Confidence On Stage: Navigating the 3 Levels of Stage Fright. Episode 35: Sick and Tired
17/06/2018 Duración: 09minLet’s be honest...Being sick SUCKS! Thats me in this episode - Sick! As performers, sometimes we have to work through sickness, sleep deprivation, heartache, life crapping on us; We have to work through it all because our audience needs us to. Yes, there is a time when you may to too sick to perform. That happens to everyone. But not every show needs to be cancelled because you coughed or sneezed. Sometimes when you push through and perform anyways you show that you are human. Performers that are human and “normal” are in short supply but the audience LOVES the authenticity of being human while on stage. They forgive our mistakes and our shortcomings when we show that we are like them...normal human beings that get sick, lose sleep, or go through hard times. Episode 34: In Your Face
14/06/2018 Duración: 11minSo you rehearsed your material, you know where to stand, you know your moves. What about your face? Facial Expressions need to be practiced and toned just like the rest of your performance. You communicate so much with your audience just with your face. The best way to practice is to first get to know your face, work the muscles and watch yourself in the mirror or on video. Once you know your own face you can better convey the intended emotion of the performance. Episode 33: How To Be Yourself On Stage
08/06/2018 Duración: 12minI’ve said it before, when you step on stage your persona allows you to be the truest version of yourself. That's a pretty scary thought sometimes. So how do you pick what to let out? Building your stage persona will take time and reflection. You can start by emulating those you look up to. Observe who they are on stage and how they present themselves. Take one thing….just one and start there. Add the pieces of you that are the most true and raw. This is where reflection comes in. You have to look deep and figure out the part of you that you are most afraid to show and bring that out. Then you have to have confidence...or at least your persona does. Then you step into that character and viola! Stage Persona. Episode 32: What's Your Name?
04/06/2018 Duración: 15minHaving a stage name makes it easy for being to connect with you after the show, it helps people find you. Using your real name could help people find you also...but in more of a creepy, stalker sort of way. A stage name is similar to a pen name for an author. It is your brand and how people will be able to remember you. When choosing your name you will want to spend some time giving it thought, don’t just pick it on a whim. Make it mean special, make it mean something. You will also do well to ensure it is easy to spell so when people try to connect with you they do not have to try 30 different version of what they think your name is. Pick a name that you will not have to change in 5-10 years. Episode 31: Share Your Dreams
01/06/2018 Duración: 10minOne of the things you learn as a coach is the best methods of helping people hold themselves accountable while pursuing their passion. It is so easy to give up if no one knows what you are doing Sharing your Dreams with the people that are closest with you will help hold you accountable simply because they will ask about it. Just knowing other people are waiting to see what you can accomplish is enough to push you to do more, rehearse more, make more phone calls. Share you performing passion with everyone you can because they will help push you to new heights and they will be the ones to celebrate with you when you are successful. Episode 30: The Three Gates of Performing
30/05/2018 Duración: 07minEvery performer has to go through these 3 gates in order to “make it.” Are you Good Enough? Do You Want it? Are you tough enough to get it? Are you good enough? How easy would it be to just say no and give up? Pretty easy right? But you can fix that no, you can work your tail off to get better, to grow as an artist. Do You want it? Prove it! What have you done to show you want it? Are you tough enough to get it? You can be. You can keep going until you get to that YES! To that stage of your dreams. Iit takes the hard work (gate 1), passion (gate 2), and tenacity. Lets do this! Episode 29: Why the Hesitation?
29/05/2018 Duración: 09minThere are little moments when we are on stage that our mind begins to question what our body is doing. In these moments we have a choice to make. Do we play it safe, or go big? Did you hesitate? We have to go big, we have to push through that moment of weakness and do the things we are feeling. That is what makes us strong performers, the ability to leave it all on the stage. Hesitation will create disappointment. You should never leave the stage knowing there was more you can do. Keep your mind right, and just go with your gut, do the things that scare you. Episode 28: The Big D
24/05/2018 Duración: 09mint's not what you think I swear. You can’t stop it but you can certain avoid it. Drama does NOT have to rule your life or your career. Often times we are affected by drama due to some selfish or self-righteous (or both) individual that feels the need to make every situation about them. Drama Queens make a HUGE deal out of the smallest issue and they keep stirring that pot until everyone they associate with is involved in problems they have no business being involved with. Drama Sucks! Don’t let it suck you in. Episode 27: Dealing with a Copycat
18/05/2018 Duración: 11minHave you ever felt like another entertainer was stealing your ideas? All your hard word and the creative process and then ‘POOF’ someone just takes your idea or copies what you do. Who do they think they are? Maybe not who you think… There is an old saying “Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.” Many times when we feel like someone is copying us, they are actually inspired by us. Take that thought for a spin. We have inspired them and given them something to strive for. Before you attack these supposed Copycats - stop, take a moment and think about why they are mimicking your style. Is there a slight chance that they are using your performance as a based for what they strive to do? Perhaps we should engage them rather than attach them. Let's check the ego on this one. I have been on the bad side of an ego-trip and trust me, it destroys dreams and crushes a novice performers hopes of learning from you and modeling you. Episode 26: Just Be Nice
08/05/2018 Duración: 13minThere are going to b many times when you e working with other entertainers. Maybe you are in the same show, maybe you are collaboration, maybe its a competition. No matter what it is, there are behaviors that are respectful and behaviors that should never happen. Professional courtesy is easy to master if you live by the golden rule: Treat others how you would like to be treated, but we don’t always do that. This episode Reggie talks about the little things you can do to make sure you are respectful and respectED as an entertainer. If you want the short version: Just be nice. Episode 25: Number Three
30/04/2018 Duración: 09minThere are 3 things that every performer wants to happen when they step on stage. As we go through number one and number two, keep in mind number three by far the most important. Anyone that can be successful with number three will be successful. One and Two will happen without fail as long as you are able to master number three. Episode 24: Know your worth / When to Say NO
20/04/2018 Duración: 16minHave you ever been approached for a booking or gig that just did not feel right? Maybe it was the low-ball pay; maybe it was how you were approached. Knowing what your worth will help when deciding it’s time to say no. When I was approached for a booking that was posted publicly like a sales ad, I knew I could not be a part of that show. There was no vision, no direction just an open call for first-come, first-served. When it is done in this way the entertainers can feel devalued and as entertainers, we need to feel special. Episode 23: You are More than a Performer
17/04/2018 Duración: 14minIt is perfectly normal to have a job and still be a performer. Its ok to have a job and go after your passion at the same time. We all have to balance work, rehearsal, family, performances and life events. Too many performers neglect other parts of thei life to pursue their passions. While I 100% support you going for your passion, you are also allowed to have family time, you are allowed to have a job, you are allowed to have a LIFE off stage. You do not have to be “ON” all the time. Yes-you have to put in work; Yes-you have to push yourself, but you are also a mother, father, spouse, daughter, son, friend, neighbor, grandchild, grandparent, and you are still you. It is ok to take time for your family and for yourself. Don’t neglect your dreams, but also don’t neglect your life. Episode 22: Putting All Your Eggs in One Basket
01/04/2018 Duración: 11minFocusing on your dreams is one of the most important decisions you will make. It is truly life-altering. So what about the wife and kids? What about all the financial responsibilities lying over there on the counter in the form of BILLS? Its ok to need a job. Keeping a steady income does not mean you are giving up on your life’s dream. Its ok to do (and sometimes enjoy) both. You may even fin your performance skills useful in other environments at work. Never give up on the dream but don’t run from responsibility. Episode 20: There's Always Gonna Be Another Mountain
26/03/2018 Duración: 13minAdversity is inevitable when you are a performer. There are going to be people and things that slow you down or try to bring you down. It's all in how you face it. There are going to be empty crowds, there are going to be rough nights, there are going to be people that just don’t like you or don’t get you. The key is don’t let it slow you down. As performer’s we are going to get put through the ringer, but it's all about getting out the other side stronger. Episode 19: Repetitive is Boring
19/03/2018 Duración: 13minHave you ever seen a movie so many times you damn-near have it memorized? What if your audience felt that way about you? It happens more often than you might think. You have this show or bit you do for the first time - it goes over incredibly well. So you do it again. As a performer you are excited that the audience is receiving your creation so well, so you continue doing the same show or bit. What happens? Eventually your audience is going to fizzle out. This doesn’t make you a poor performer, it DOES, however, make you repetative and repetative is Boring. People crave the new and different and if you want to keep moving forward and gaining fans, you have to be the one to give them what the crave. Get creative with all aspects of your performance, push boundaries. And Don’t apologize for experimenting. Episode 18: Who Are You? I Really Wanna Know
14/03/2018 Duración: 12minWho Are you when you step on stage? If that is a question that has never crossed your mind, tune in. As Performers, anytime we step on stage we should have a persona, or character that is our own. We step into this persona when we are on stage so we can feel free to be the truest version of ourselves without any fear of judgement. Having a character allows you to fully explore your creativity and even push boundaries. Even if you do not use a stage name (which if not, it is HIGHLY recommended that you start) you can benefit from having a persona. You get to create this character how you see yourself, finally allowing the audience to see who you see, or who you WANT to see. Episode 17: What I Learned from a Drag Queen
11/03/2018 Duración: 13minIn this episode we take a deep dive into the root of the art of drag - Lip Sync. Many people disregard lip sync as an art form and I am here to advocate why every performer should learn to lip sync like a Drag Queen. Drag Queens are notorious for the flamboyant costumes, outrageous hair and creative make-up but what most people fail to see is the art and focus that goes into the lip sync portion of the performance. We also discuss the importance of every performer learning to lip sync and learning to perform drag.
