Training camp has began for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and it has been a very newsworthy few days for the team.. All of the hot topics are covered on this week’s edition of Downey and Martez. Trey Downey and Len Martez start the show by discussing the injury to Ryan Jensen and what it means for Tampa Bay. The guys discussed whether the Bucs might go out and get a veteran center or if Robert Hainsey would take over the starting job if Jensen misses extended time.  The conversation then turned to the signing of Julio Jones. Trey and Len agreed that his redzone presence is probably the biggest benefit to signing the vet. Over the past month Trey Downey and Len Martez have previewed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers divisional foes. This week it is time for the Downey & Martez Buccaneers training camp preview. The guys opened the show by discussing running back Leonard Fournette’s weight and how much of a storyline that will be throughout camp. The guys then moved on to what they agreed is the biggest storyline of training camp, the offensive line. The guys discussed and debated who might end up with the final starting guard position between Aaron Stinnie, Robert Hainsey, and Luke Goedeke.  The guys also discussed the tight end position including the signing of free agent Kyle Rudolph and rookie Cade Otton being cleared to practice. The final edition of our NFC South team previews is on tap on this week’s edition of Downey and Martez. Before Trey and Len got into the New Orleans Saints, the guys had some Tampa Bay Buccaneers news to discuss. Trey and Len kicked the tires on the report by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN that former Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants tight end Kyle Rudolph is drawing interest from the Bucs. The guys then moved on to the Saints. The first topic was how this team might look different in the post Sean Payton era with Dennis Allen as their new head coach. After discussing the additions of safety Tyrann Matthieu, wide receivers Jarvis Landry and rookie Chris Olave, Trey and Len then discussed what to expect from former Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston without Payton. Let’s just say that there was a disagreement in terms of what to expect from Winston, who saw his season end last year when he suffered a knee injury against his former team in week seven. Our NFC South division previews continue on this week’s edition of Downey & Martez. The Carolina Panthers are on the docket for this show.  Trey Downey and Len Martez obviously begin the show by discussing the breaking news that quarterback Baker Mayfield has been traded to Carolina. The guys discussed the deal and how it could end up being a steal for the Panthers. Trey then asked Len just how much of an upgrade Mayfield is over Sam Darnold. Trey then voiced his concerns about the move in relation to Mayfield’s locker room struggles in Cleveland and the shaky coaching situation in Carolina. The gents then went over the off-season moves made to bolster the offensive line. Len also added a potential reason why running back Christian McCaffrey hasn't been able to stay healthy the last two years but examined the difference he could make if on the field this year. July is here and that means NFL training camps are drawing near. On this week’s edition of Downey and Martez, Trey Downey and Len Martez begin their previews of the Buccaneers divisional foes. First on the docket is the Atlanta Falcons. Trey and Len discuss the Falcons decision to move on from Matt Ryan and Len explains why he thinks the situation in Atlanta is the worst quarterback situation in the NFL. Trey ponders if the Falcons might give rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder a shot at some-point during the season to see what he has, but Len thinks Ridder would be set up to fail. The guys then discuss the limited weapons Marcus Mariota or Ridder have to work with because of wide receiver Calvin Ridley’s suspension. The guys also examine whether Kyle Pitts can make a big leap in year 2 and whether Cordarelle Patterson will offer fantasy owners the same success he did in 2021. It is time for a big, brand new episode of Downey and Martez. This week’s main topic was obviously Rob Gronkowski’s retirement and the guys discussed it from all angles.  Trey started off by asking Len how surprised he was when the announcement came out. The conversation then went on to whether this is permanent or if Gronk could come back at some point during the season. Trey and Len also looked at what his legacy is and if he will go down as the greatest tight end to ever play in the NFL. The gents then moved onto the implications for the Buccaneers. The guys broke down all of the 2022 draft class for the Buccaneers on this show.
