Do You Hear What I Hear?
27/10/2019Luke 8:1-21 is all about hearing the Word of God and responding to that Word. We see this text broken into four sections: the parable of the sower, Jesus’ reason for speaking in parables and explanation of the parable of the sower, the parable of a lamp under a jar, and Jesus’ mother and brothers. These four sections all point to different aspects of our response to the hearing of God’s Word.

As they recline to eat and talk they are interrupted by a woman with a reputation This woman begins to touch Jesus, weeping and washing his feet with perfume and her hair. It’s in Jesus’ response to her and also the responses of Simon and this woman to Jesus that we learn so much. Here, we see that the more we recognize God’s grace in our lives, the greater our gratitude and generosity will be.

Great (Unmet) Expectations
13/10/2019The messianic expectation of God’s people is very evident in our text, this week. The original, Jewish audience has been looking forward to the day when God’s King would come to rule and reign. Had the day finally come? Even John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus, is wondering if he is the one who is to come. Here, we see that Jesus came to do what God intended, not what people expected.

The Necessity of Obedience

Here, we see that Jesus’ Lordship demands humble obedience, not hypocritical lip service.

Desperate Rejoicing
