Peggy's Background - People who know her now would be surprised to learn about the family that she grew up in. Her father was in the military and they moved around a lot.  Her family were strict Catholics. She had a pretty conservative up bringing.  She loved moving around and learning about other places, but moving around was very hard emotionally.  Her parents fought a lot and drank a lot and there was domestic violence in her family. She had a lot of early experiences that made her feel like she would not be a good mother.  Mothering for her was a way to sure her way up with information and research.  She was networking before the word was popular.  This was how she set myself up to be the parent I wanted to be because I did not have a good role model.

I know that as an IBCLC, I should probably stick to the letter of the law, so to speak and correct moms who say they are tandem nursing their twins.  They are happy.  They are proud.  They are doing this extraordinary act of taking care of their little ones.  The last thing I am going to do is make a big stink about the correctness of the definition.  I just want them to enjoy themselves and feel proud of what they are doing. 

The technical definition is nursing 2 different children of 2 different ages. However, we both agree, putting labels aside, that any mom who is nursing 2 children at once and feels she is tandem nursing,    Let's support her with breastfeeding and allow her the space to call it whatever she pleases.  If we are helping her, our focus is on what she is doing rather then labels and definitions

We have a discussion about the differences in how babies respond to the procedure, the aftercare exercises and how long it takes some babies to recover from the procedure and mothers and babies to get to the place of normal breastfeeding. Dr. Agarwal highlights the fact that the tongue does not know how to really move well as it has been restricted for so long. So all the mechanics of the tongue movement and how it is going to function – all this change needs an adjustment period. It takes a while for the tongue to figure out what it is suppose to do. There are also a lot of pieces to this recovery and normal breastfeeding. Some of these moving parts ( variables) are: 1. Mom’s breast size, 2. Mom’s milk production. 3. Mom’s pain level 4. Because this is so long, myself and others have picked up a habit of calling ourselves LCs or lactation consultants. This was fine for a while, however in recent years there have been many weekend or week long courses that have cropped up and when a person graduates from that course, they can call themselves a LC ( lactation consultant) or or an LS ( lactation specialist)or BC (breastfeeding counselor) or CBC ( certified breastfeeding counselor) or CLC ( certified lactation consultant) or any number of titles.
