  • 131: Episodic Gaming

    05/02/2016 Duración: 01h08min

Episodic gaming has really taken off in the last few years, despite a troubling start. We share what we enjoy about this format, but also what sometimes isn't so great about it, and which games we're still waiting to be finished. Is episodic content here to stay? Vinnk and Sean examine the perils and the promise of this approach to gaming, and try to figure out what even counts as episodic versus a sequel. And, for the first time in a long time, we share both a Future Retro and Pile of Shame! In the same episode! Mostly. (There might be another one on the website...) • Denshimail 130: Part of the Problem

    29/01/2016 Duración: 50min

Famicom Dojo and shows like it have been driving up demand for Japanese retro games. Unfortunately, these exports also drive up prices for the copies still in the country. We answer these questions and more on this week's Denshimail!Vinnk and SeanOrange pixel art by Louis Lloyd-Judson: https://louistrations.co.uk. • 130: Still Gathering Herbs

    22/01/2016 Duración: 01h34min

After a few false starts, Vinnk is starting to play Mass Effect, which brings to mind the difference between such BioWare games, and the Japanese RPGs of our youth. How have RPGs changed? Is the genre even that well-defined any more? And what DOES Vinnk think of Mass Effect, anyway? Sean and Vinnk talk more about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Future Retro brings up two great games that are so addictive they threaten to grind the rest of the podcast to a halt. And can you choose poorly, or otherwise be surprised? Vinnk and Sean are joined by Game Dave of RetroWare as they journey through 40 years of game console history, and where they fell at each point along the way, plus pile on the shame with the games that they may never play as newer generations replace the current ones. • 125: Play Old Games

    21/08/2015 Duración: 01h14min

We really can't say this enough or more clearly: play old games. Don't be discouraged because they might look funny, or require text inputs, or don't have voice acting. Play old games. There's an artistry to old games. Which isn't to say modern games aren't art, because clearly that's nonsense, but there is something to be appreciated in a title that made the most of the technology available. Except maybe N64 games. Those haven't aged well. Vinnk and Sean rail against the idea that old games are either unplayable, or simply aren't worth playing when there's new stuff out there. At particular issue is how game publishers denigrate old games in order to sell new ones. What other industry does that? Except maybe cars. Ignore that one. Also, no shame this week as we bring you all Future Retro! Sean finished Minish Cap, and Vinnk talks about a version of Final Fight you've possibly never heard of and probably never played before. • 124: Retro VGS

    07/08/2015 Duración: 01h30min

What if a video game system didn't need to connect to the internet for constant software and firmware updates? What if there was no hard drive, and the games were on cartridges? That might sound like a blast from the past, but it's what the aptly-named Retro VGS promises for the future. Sean and Vinnk welcome Mike Kennedy to talk about the Retro's evolution from a throwback 16-bit system to an infinitely configurable all-in-one platform for modern and vintage gaming. • 123: Shooters

    24/07/2015 Duración: 01h03min

Vinnk was never really one for shooters. But that's before he played Splatoon. Vinnk and Sean discuss the history of shooters, how Nintendo was able to put its own spin on a genre, and then make that previously uninteresting entire genre more appealing. (At least to Vinnk.) Oh, and Sean tries to convince Vinnk to play Mass Effect again, if shooters are his thing now. "Famicom Thrash" and "RPG" theme songs by the Imari Tones: http://imaritones.net.
