The first episode of Louisiana Eats broadcast on June 9, 2010. That year also marked the 125th anniversary of New Orleans streetcar line. We look back at our very first field piece, when we took a streetcar ride with the late, great historian Michael Mizell Nelson. Then, we revisit our conversation with Priestess Miriam Chamani, who presides over North Rampart Street s Voodoo Spiritual Temple. In 2014, the Louisiana Eats crew traveled to Napa Valley for an intensive four day seminar at Cakebread Cellars American Harvest Workshop. We begin with a local favorite PJ s Coffee which Phyllis Jordan founded 40 years ago. Phyllis reflects on the early years, when she became the first commercial iced coffee purveyor in New Orleans. One hundred years later, the legendary restaurant remains an institution, with endless stories to tell. Every year a book is chosen with the idea that New Orleans residents can share the experience of reading the same book at the same time. Through partnerships with the Literary Alliance of New Orleans, Louisiana Books To Prisoners and the Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings, the chosen book is provided free of charge to prison inmates and used in adult education programs throughout the greater New Orleans area. At the same time, the New Orleans Public Library, WRBH Reading Radio and the Pirates Alley Faulkner Society host community programming and access to the book for those with limited income and impaired vision. In this way, everyone from an exclusive book club member to a prison inmate will share the experience of enjoying a good read.
