Kicking off our Appearance Matters 10 Conference Series, Maia speaks with A/Professor Kathleen Bogart. About Dr Kathleen Bogart Kathleen was born with a facial difference and is dedicated to research and advocacy intervening on visible difference stigma and ableism. Passionate about the disability community, she is the co-founder of the Disability Advocacy and Research Network (DARN) for disabled psychologists and allies. In addition to more than 55 scientific journal articles, her work has also been featured in the New York Times, Time, and the Financial Times. She has also delivered a TEDx talk, The Psychology of Ableism, and produces a Psychology Today blog focused on the psychology of ableism. This month, we are joined by Kieran Moulton, a second year PhD student at the Centre for Appearance Research, who tells us all about his research into tattooing and scars (so far!) Kieran discusses two studies, looking into the experiences of tattoo artists who have provided scar tattoos, and the experiences of those who have used tattoos to either decorate or camouflage their scars. This month our very own Appearance Matters the podcast co-host, Bruna Costa, joins us to share insights from her doctoral research project, conducted as part of her Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology. Bruna discusses the importance of increasing representation of marginalised groups within visible difference research and working closely with community partners. Bruna also shares novel insights from her research focussed on the experiences of UK Somali adults with visible facial differences.
