  • E46: Independent Distilling and Richland Rum

    12/11/2016 Duración: 47min

At the Beer Guys Radio Show, we love our craft beer.  But once in a while, we like to break the mold a bit.  And that's what we did this week. We talk distilling - whiskey and rum to be specific. Erik Vonk from Savannah's Richland Rum joined us, as did Michael Anderson from Decatur's Independent Distilling.  Craft beer and craft distilling has many things in common, and we talk to Erik and Michael about that, including how they got their start in distilling. Also the vagaries involved in barrel aging, and the importance of keeping their ingredients local.  Truck and Tap's Beers of the Week Of course, we had beers of the week, including:  A flight of Terrapin's Wake and Bake Coffee Stout from 2015 and 2016. • E44: Arches Brewing Loves Lagers

    29/10/2016 Duración: 47min

It takes some courage to open up a craft brewery focusing mainly on lagers.  After all, lagers require a little more love...time...and temperature control before they're ready to serve.  And for the most part, craft beer drinkers are mainly an ale-centric bunch.  But for the men behind Hapeville's Arches Brewing, craft lagers are a way to showcase their brewing skills. Ryan Fogelgren and Jamey Adams joined us in the studios this week. Specializing in crisp, clean-drinking (mainly) German-style beers, the crew behind Arches have gained a good following in the community, and have even gained fans at the nearby Porsche headquarters.  We talked about their start in the brewing business, their growth, and the future. • E43: Georgia Beer History with Rom Smith and Mary Boyle

    22/10/2016 Duración: 49min

A little history for you this week.  Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle are with us today. Not only are they craft beer fans, they are the authors of “Atlanta Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the South” as well as “Prohibition in Atlanta: Temperance, Tiger Kings and White Lightning.” Atlanta and the south have had a love/hate relationship with alcohol over the past 250 or so years.  From the Whitehall Tavern opening on the West End in 1835 (back when Atlanta was called Terminus), to the mayoral election of Moses Frumwalt (of the awesomely named "Free and Rowdy" party) over Jonathan Norcross (of the "Moral Party), the early years of the region were quite...interesting.  Then, with the Civil War, reconstruction, and the abolitionist movement, the region underwent many, many changes.  The opening of Atlantic Brewing in 1935 (it was located on the current site of the downtown Hilton) marked a turn in Atlanta's brewing history. After its closing in the 50s, Atlanta's only brewery was a branch

  • Terrapin Brew Lab coming to the Home of the Atlanta Braves

    18/10/2016 Duración: 02min

Beer, Baseball and Barbecue. What's more American than that?  Not much, if you ask me.  The new home for the Atlanta Braves is going up in Cobb County. It will not only feature the ballpark, but also a shopping and dining space called the Battery Atlanta.  Some of the Atlanta stalwart restaurants that are planned for the Battery are Antico Pizza, Ford Fry's Superica, and the iconic BBQ joint Fox Brothers.  Joining Fox Brothers in their venture? Terrapin Beer Company.  Co-founder "Spike" Buckowski, and representatives from the Atlanta Braves were on hand at Fox Brothers to make the announcement.  The tap room will not only feature Terrapin's regular and seasonal releases, but will also house a brand new pilot system that will allow Terrapin's brewers to experiment with new recipes on a smaller scale.  We talked to Spike about this new venture.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! • Terrapin Brewing Co. - Episode 42 - 10/15/16

    15/10/2016 Duración: 47min

Spike was in the house today.  No, not the inspiration for the great Elvis Costello album (at least not as far as we know), but "Spike" Buckowski, one of the founders of Athens' Terrapin Beer Company joined us in studio this week.  We talked about their start, and growth - as the third oldest craft brewery in Georgia, they were instrumental in building the scene as we know it today. And yes, we also talked about Tenth and Blake (the craft and import division of Miller/Coors) acquiring a majority stake in the brewery.  Of course, we also talked beer. We cracked open a few of Terrapin's newest releases, inlcuding:  Truck and Tap's Beers of the Week:  Terrapin Moo-Hoo chocolate milk stout Terrapin Luau Krunkles IPA  Terrapin So Fresh and So Green, Green Terrapin/Shmaltz 2016 Reunion Ale Almanac White Label (silver medal winner at GABF) Headlines (sponsored by Your Pie Perimeter) GEORGIA Festival showscases local breweries (Source: LaGrange News) Cartersville AB plant sends canned

    24/09/2016 Duración: 47min

What do you get when you combine a Georgia native, an interest in home brewing and an education in Colorado?  A really awesome brewpub, that's what. Nick Tanner, brewmaster of Cherry Street Brewing Cooperative in Cumming joined the Beer Guys in studio. We were able to grab Nick for an interview as he was in the midst of shipping beer to the upcoming Great American Beer Festival.  Nick talked about his background, growing up in the restaurant industry, discovering craft beer while at Colorado State University, and heading back to his hometown to open a brewpub and tap room in partnership with Rick Tanner's Grille and Bar in the Vickery Village center.
