Ironman Meets Zoom (Ep. 82)
15/09/2020 Duración: 49minAfter a restful summer, I can't think of a better way to start off the new season than with a reunion! Long time listeners will remember experienced Ironman triathletes Rob Koh and Sam Chung. Both Sam and Rob were training for Ironman races when COVID-19 hit the U.S. in early March. In today's episode, they recount both the general chaos and confusion of those early days and how it impacted their training, as well as how their triathlon community adjusted to the new realities of the pandemic and their experience with "virtual" racing. Along they way, they also make a solid effort to recruit co-host Eugene Chang into the sport! Thank you Sam and Rob for once again coming on the podcast (for what's now looking like a series!). Thank you Eugene as always for your co-hosting presence. And thank you everyone for listening! Update / Spoiler alert: After we recorded this episode, Sam got his bike back! :) Music: tubebackr - District 19 Babasmas - City Lights My reading journey: https://www.goodreads.com/review/l

How to Fix Stuff (Ep. 81)
16/06/2020 Duración: 51minIf there's one major difference between Eugene and David, it's that one of us is extremely handy and the other is not. Eugene grew up watching shows like This Old House and New Yankee Workshop, while David ... let's just say for him putting together an Ikea end table is an accomplishment! In this episode, Eugene provides insight on how to get better at handiness and repair, while David shares some of his coping mechanisms for quelling his fear of drill bits and instruction manuals . Eugene Doesn't Like Finishing To-Do Lists (!) (Ep. 80)
03/06/2020 Duración: 43minWhat heresy is this? Who doesn't like to complete their to do lists? The sense of accomplishment? The glory? In this episode, David and Eugene talk about how we stay organized and get stuff done. David asks for help with his problem of chronically losing track of tasks he's supposed to do, while Eugene discusses how he's learned over the years how to develop a routine, and why he sometimes DOESN'T like getting things done. Star Trek: Picard (Ep. 79)
20/05/2020 Duración: 44minFrom K-dramas to the stars, our journey through television continues. Today, Eugene and David discuss episode one of the newest Star Trek franchise, Picard. Growing up, both of us were fans of The Next Generation, so returning to the world of Jean-Luc Picard feels a little like coming home. We talk through the many twists and turns of the pilot episode (Data's back!), what we liked and didn't like, and give our thoughts on the essence of what makes Star Trek, Star Trek. Crash Landing On You (Ep. 78)
06/05/2020 Duración: 48minIt’s happening! Eugene is watching a Korean drama. And not just any, but the smash hit, Crash Landing On You. This show was popular enough even in the United States that there was a lengthy story about it in the Washington Post (link below). In today’s podcast, Eugene and David talk about episode 5 of the show, our likes and dislikes, North Korean culture, and our thoughts about Kdramas in general. Eugene also gives a verdict for what future (if any) K-dramas may have in his television consumption. Crash Landing is currently available on Netflix. As always, thank you for listening! Where You Are (Ep. 76)
08/04/2020 Duración: 42minDo you love where you live? Or do you wish you could move? As we all shelter in place, Eugene and I discuss the places we’ve lived, and where we live now. We talk about what we love about our respective areas and things we wished were different. I’ll be honest, this episode touched a nerve. Specifically, Eugene raises a couple of personally provocative questions in the middle of the episode that got me thinking about about the choices I’ve made about where we call home, and whether those decisions were the right ones. 24/03/2020 Duración: 41minWhat makes a good leader? Chances are you've worked for both good and bad bosses in the past. What inspires and motivates people to be their best selves? Now more than ever, the world is looking for strong leaders who can provide comfort, vision, and determination through a time of crisis. Strength, Cardio, Running, HIIT – Our Workouts (Ep. 73)
25/02/2020 Duración: 45minNeither Eugene or David do Crossfit, Ironman, or bodybuilding contests -- although we’ve both run half marathons and at least one of us uses the app for Peloton. In this episode, we talk about our fitness and workout regimen. Eugene gets into the ups and downs of running, David discusses the best gym routine that works for him, and we talk workout tech, gym etiquette, and why David is terrible at running outdoors. Free Range Parenting (Ep. 67)
23/10/2019 Duración: 52minShould we be free range parents? David and Eugene discuss the concept of raising children in the spirit of greater independence and less supervision. And while both of us applaud the notion that children should take risks, make mistakes, and learn from failure, in our opinion, free range parenting has one MAJOR flaw that keeps us from calling ourselves FRP's. Should You Buy $200 Jeans? (Ep. 63)
28/08/2019 Duración: 56minLet me say this upfront: For some of us, the idea of spending $200 on a single pair of jeans sounds outrageous, while for others, it’s a bargain. For most of my life, I fell squarely in the first camp. Clothing has always been a complicated and sensitive topic for me, for reasons I get into here. In this episode, I talk about why for me my $200 pair of jeans represents a step toward taking ownership of my apparel (perhaps for the first time). Eugene and I also discuss how we like to shop for clothes, what we think our style represents, and some of our favorite brands. We hope you give this a listen! 14/08/2019 Duración: 47minChances are, there's a Slytherin in your life. Slytherins are complicated, even to ourselves. Today we continue our journey through the Hogwarts School, this time discussing the Houses of Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Which Hogwarts House Are You In? (Ep. 61)
01/08/2019 Duración: 44minAre you a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin? A few episodes back I talked about “channeling your inner Slytherin” and that got us thinking about the four houses of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In today’s episode, we talk about which house we think we belong in, the pros and cons of each house, and why sometimes your greatest strength can also be your greatest weakness. We hope we did right by Harry Potter fans out there. (More HP content to come!) As ever, thanks for listening! Avengers: Endgame (Spoilers!) (Ep. 57)
04/06/2019 Duración: 44minIf you've been listening to this podcast for a while, hopefully you know our movie reviews are unlike what you typically find online. With the speed of social media, I feel like the Avengers moment has already passed and the current buzz is all about Always Be My Maybe. (Side note: Who would have thought in the "Bill and Ted" days that Keanu Reeves would be such a fantastic Asian American meme?!?) In this episode, Eugene and I breakdown our thoughts of the latest MCU movie, why the Tony Stark/Pepper Potts storyline was so important to David, the two scenes respectively that made us cry, and more. What We’ve Learned (or Wish We Knew): Relationships (Ep. 56)
21/05/2019 Duración: 52minLove isn’t always easy. Relationships take work. Sometimes the person in a relationship who needs to reflect on this most is the least likely to do that work. Eugene and I have both been married for several years. In that time, we’ve learned a few things about what what works for us and what doesn't. More often than not those lessons have come from past conflict and grief. In today’s episode, we get a little personal, as we share what we’ve learned or wish we had known about love and relationships. Thanks for listening! This is Why I Travel (Ep. 55)
07/05/2019 Duración: 46minAfter returning from a trip to Hong Kong and Seoul, Korea with my parents, I’ve come up with some answers to the question, “Why do you travel?” Although as you’ll hear, my version of an ideal travel vacation is not for everyone (morning commute anyone?). I also talk about how I managed to lose my glasses, weird things about Hong Kong and Seoul, and why Eugene needs to visit an Irish pub. Am I A Good Writer? (The Hustle) (Ep. 54)
23/04/2019 Duración: 13minIn my twenties, I had a quarter life crisis. I thought about quitting my job and switching careers. While today's episode isn’t about my quarter life crisis per se, it's about something unexpected (and harrowing) that happened along that journey. That incident, along with a few others, have over time helped me learn how to receive criticism, and provided moments of reflections about the “side hustle” I love. Thanks for listening! The Essence of Place - Why We Travel (Ep. 52)
27/03/2019 Duración: 46minWhy do we travel? What makes us spend our money to leave familiar surroundings, sit in an airplane, and trek into unknown places? As David prepares for a trip to Asia, we spend some time talking about our travel experiences, where we’d love to visit, and what drives us (or doesn’t) to pick up and go. David talks about how he’s trying to change from a “travel scrooge” to a fearless(ish) wanderer, and Eugene reveals the one form of travel he would never, ever do. Thanks for listening! Icebreaker: The $350,000 Car Dividing the Auto Industry (Ep. 51)
20/03/2019 Duración: 27minI’ve been sick for the past few weeks. When I’m sick I find I want to turn off my brain, meaning no news, books, podcasts, etc. But for some reason, I find watching videos about cars to be strangely relaxing. This is probably because I’m otherwise so removed from cars and the car industry. For me, it’s like the equivalent of the Food Network or HGTV. In this podcast extra, I ask Eugene for his thoughts about the one car that appears to be dividing auto journalists and car enthusiasts more than any other. We also discuss why we both feel minivans are superior to SUVs and share a quick update on our weight loss and fitness goals. Next week, we’ll be back with another full episode of the podcast. 06/02/2019 Duración: 01h08minDavid and Eugene have had very different journeys to weight loss. As kids, David shopped at the “huskies” section of boy’s apparel, while skinny Eugene sometimes quite literally “forgot to eat.” In this episode, we share our personal experiences with managing weight, discuss why stress and lack of sleep are often at the heart of our weight issues, and get VERY practical with tips, tricks, and habits that ACTUALLY work for us.
