Happy Trails

This morning I talked with Dave Hayes, board member of the Humboldt Trails Council. We talked about the trails stewards program, Lacks Creek and the McKay tract. We also talked about Bike month and bike to school day which is tomorrow.

This morning Emily got us up to speed on land trust/trail improvements in McKinleyville, pedestrian workshops in Hoopa today and McKinleyville tomorrow, a recap of the State Trails Conference and a preview of Bike Month just to name a few.

This morning Emily and I spoke with Debi Farber Bush about the 2nd annual Jammie taking place this Sunday starting at 9am at Los Bagels in Arcata. It will be a party atmosphere with live music from the Jim Lahman Band. Yours truly will be MCing the event

Emily and I speak with Matt Harvey of the CHP and Joan Levy of the Department of Health and Human Services about the Redwood Crossing Guard Program and the Launch of this pilot program at Lafayette Elementary in Myrtletown. We also talked about the next iteration of the Draft Bicycle Ordinance in Eureka. When this was first proposed it met with a great deal of controversy. Other agencies have since weighed in on it. The city council will be discussing it today.

This morning Emily and I spoke with Brian Simon of Caltrans about the non-motorised improvements that have been made thus far in the community of Manilla and new proposals that include a separate class 1 trail and larger colorized shoulder on hwy 255. There will be a public meeting on these projects tomorrow night at the Manilla community Center from 5pm till 7pm

Emily and I spent this episode talking about various things and proposed laws that could impact pedestrian, bike and trail issues around the state and locally.

Cliff and Emily talk with Dan Rivoire of the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition and newly elected member of the San Luis Obispo City Council. We spoke of the County General Plan update, innovative funding policy and long term transportation goals of San Luis Obispo.

Today Emily and I spoke with Anne Thomas of Shasta Living Streets. Redding already has an extensive, world class trail network. Shasta Living Street's goals include: • Quiet, low-speed residential streets • A world-class bicycling network with bike lanes to serve people of all abilities, ages 8 to 80 • Protected bike lanes on busy streets with sophisticated intersection controls • Off-street pathways, greenways and trails • Walkable, bicycle-friendly business districts • All children can walk or bike to school • Services and events to support community-wide active living excellence

This morning Emily and I spoke with Jeff Schwein of Green Dot Transportation Solutions and Charles Roecklein, City Engineer for Eureka. The south entry to Eureka was looked at in terms of safety and aesthetic. Various different solutions are being discussed at a public workshop tomorrow (Wednesday) starting at 5:30pm at the Wharfinger Building by the small boat basin in Eureka.

This morning Emily and I spoke with Phil Dow, MCOG Director (Mendocino Council of Governments) on the Covelo Transportation Project. Multipurpose trail through Covelo in partnership with Caltrans and local tribes.

This morning Emily and I talked with Tony Dang of California Walks about the goal and mission of the organization to create safe, healthy, walkable communities in California, how CalWalks works with local affiliates and partners, the 2025 Strategic Framework for Increasing Walkability in CA, a summary of their recent Best Foot Forward Summit and some upcoming Community Pedestrian Safety Trainings that CalWalks will be leading in Humboldt County.

Emily and I talk about progress on local trail projects such as the Bay Trail and Arcata's progress on phase one of the northern part. Also Emily was just in Ukiah and got a first hand look at their new Rail With Trail Project.

Today Emily and I spoke with Ryan Branciforte about their company Trailhead Labs whose goal it is to make trail data and transit data available in real time in a open source format to be available to counties, municipalities, and individuals.

This morning Emily and I spoke with Michael Kauffman, who came down to the KHUM studios. He is now helping to launch a new non-profit, the Bigfoot Trail Alliance, to steward the development of a formalized hiking trail in the Klamaths - like the PCT. The Bigfoot Trail will traverse many existing routes in the national forests through northern CA from the Yolla Bollys to Crescent City.

Cliff and Emily talk with Crescent City's Harbormaster, Charlie Helms about funding for a new section of the California Coastal Trail between the harbor and South Beach.

This year will mark a lot of progress on the Humboldt Bay Trail and the McKay Community Forest. Emily details the various phases of both of these projects that are getting underway this year.

This morning Emily and I spoke with Larry Notheis of the California Conservation Corps about their partnering on conservation and trail projects in our area.

Emily and I talk with Michael Cipra of the North Coast Regional Land Trust about the Freshwater Farms trail project and restoration.

Emily and I continue our series of discussions with area land trusts. Today we spoke with Matthew Marshall of the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust.
