With concerts, shows, city celebrations and smaller group gatherings starting to happen again, it feels like things are coming alive in and around Owen Sound! Join us this week to hear about upcoming opportunities to hear live music, hear from amazing local musicians, and hear a little bit of holiday-festivity mixed in too. It's a power hour of tremendous ladies (sorry to be so gendered about it, not everyone on the playlist identifies that way!). Let's call it a celebration of a higher vocal range? Listen in to hear Neko Case take on a Sparks song, Julie Doiron reunite in the 00's with Eric's Trip, recall the nights Basia Bulat and Martha Wainwright came to Meaford Hall and Fiver played the golden town's Home + Home Fest. Revisit a classic by Doctor of Fine Arts and Summerfolk alumni Buffy Ste. Marie, check in with local songstress Brianna McGowan, regret the time I missed seeing Weather Station (and Neko for that matter) at the Avening Community Centre. Russ Walsh's (Sour Cat Records, First Winter, Cruel Bloom) entrance into fatherhood is marked on the show with some cuts from local artists he wrote about in this summer's Rrampt: Habit, Swamp Horlick and Third Development. Steve Ritchie's nephew Josh Ritchie gets in on the action with a track called '911' before Georgian Bay Roots tears the roof off the sucker with Parliament's 'Chocolate City' (yes, there's a local connection!). Summerfolk alumni Fred Eaglesmith chimes in with his song 'Wilder Than Her' and we catch up with local group The Ontarians. Collingwood's Swampy & the Note Troll capture the essence of this episode's theme with their aptly titled 'Connection'. House of Velvet and Drew McIvor round out the hour; never a dull moment on Georgian Bay Roots!

Tune in to hear Tom Allen & Co. wax poetic about John Cage getting lost in Canada, learn about ravens with composer Carmen Braden and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and light up with pianist Francine Kay's performance of Débussy's 'Feux d'Artifices'. Check out a new work by composers Spy Dénommé-Welch and Catherine Magowan performed by GBSO members, Bach inspired pieces by Summerfolk alumni Beverly Glenn Copeland and Sweetwater Artistic Director Edwin Huizinga and Bill Coulter and the deconstructed piano sounds of Gordon Monahan. The show wraps up with a lullaby written by Ian Cusson for the opera Louis Riel and a cosmic performance by Meaford electric violinist Victoria Yeh.

This is a feature interview with Alberta songwriter Scott Cook and it includes a handful of his songs too. Scott and Jon discuss the return to touring, pandemic musical community, songs for social change, updating classics, biblical imagery, the ecological cost of touring, Woody Guthrie, and meeting Pete Seeger.

Revel in the shimmering guitars of Tony McManus & Julia Toaspern, the heavy riffs of Terra Lightfoot and the deep groove of Ray Bonneville. Rock out with The Skydiggers, get down with the bluegrass of the Slocan Ramblers, surround yourself in the voices of Crystal Shawanda and Evangeline Gentle. And from Kurt Swinghammer, a real special cut called 'Owen Sound'. These artists performed all over the scenic city for one weekend, and for one hour only they're all together on this episode of Georgian Bay Roots!
