Chris Guillebeau is an author and entrepreneur - you may know him from his bestselling books like “The Art Of Noncomformity” and “The $100 Startup” or his popular essay "A Brief Guide To World Domination." He’s also a prolific blogger and the brains behind the Worldwide Domination Summit. This interview is from a few years back, but I wanted to bring it back because Chris - along with Tim Ferriss and a few others - was among the first wave of people who pioneered the path that I’ve heard so many of you say that you want to be one. Today on the podcast, * We talk a lot about an idea that’s really at the core of this show, which is that the answers to all of this are inside you. * We also get into the post-success comedown. If you’ve ever had a big win you know what I’m talking about. * Another big theme in this show is potential - how to understand your potential, what to do with that energy, and the power of living up to your potential. Adam Braun is an author and entrepreneur who you may know from his work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that creates schools and other projects that bring education to underserved populations living in rural poverty. He’s also the author of the book “The Promise Of A Pencil” and more recently the founder of a super exciting education startup called MissionU whose model is 1 year of intense, skill-based education with NO upfront tuition - instead, you give them a percentage of your income once you land that sweet job. Today on the podcast, * Why he walked away from a career in management consulting to dedicate himself to his passion of giving the rural poor access to education via Pencils Of Promise * We get into a topic I’ve been touching on a lot lately which is balance. As a new father and entrepreneur this is a big challenge for Adam and he speaks very candidly about the real tradeoffs he has to make between his company, his family and his health * On that note, he also shares some of the habits a

James is the founder + driving force behind indie rock icons The Shins and partner in the new collage app Pasted. With over 20 years in the game, he’s seen just about every facet of the music business – from tiny shows at dives bars to Billboard top 10 albums on major labels – and as you can imagine he’s learned a thing or two along the way. Today on the podcast, * Longevity and stamina. How do you stay motivated and inspired after success and hardship, the industry, dealing with the “what’s next” feeling and post-achievement comedown? * The artist-as-entrepreneur paradigm. Whether they like it or not, all artists are also entrepreneurs. What does “entrepreneur” mean to James? * Collaboration: How do you have co-creators? 10/05/2017 Duración: 01h29min

He’s also the author of Untitled: Selling Yourself Without Selling Out - the book we discuss in this episode - the creator of a video game called “Getting Up” and the founder of Complex Media. Today on the podcast, * Some super-actionable tactics for promoting your work - one that I really love is Marc’s concept of a “swag bomb,” which is a package that you deliver to someone to get their attention- for example when he’d send some Ecko gear to rappers. * Why the biggest barrier to success is - for most people - a self-imposed one: fear. Specifically, the fear of public or peer ridicule. * The power of humble beginnings. There’s this idea that you have to have best-in-class tools from the jump in order to get your start and frankly, that’s complete bs. Enjoy! Show n

  • Conquer Fear & Self-Doubt with Amanda Crew

    26/04/2017 Duración: 01h35min

Amanda Crew is an actress who’s best known for playing Monica on the hit HBO show “Silicon Valley,” which I absolutely love for skewering tech culture in a loving but deadly accurate way. If you haven’t seen the show please, please do yourself a favor and check it out - season 4 recently premiered on HBO. But her career goes back many years: she’s appeared in a ton of shows and movies like Smallville, Final Destination 3, Life As We Know It and much more. Today on the podcast, * Like almost everyone on my show, Amanda is a hyphen - she’s a passionate photographer, although it took her a while to give herself permission to be more than an actor - she talks about overcoming the social bias that you can be good at more than one thing * She talks about the low point of her career a few years back when the recession and a writer’s strike hit at the same time one of her movies flopped and she didn’t work for nearly two years - and how rebuilding her career from scratch was actually the thing that made her believe i

  • Become A Master Communicator w/ Vanessa Van Edwards

    19/04/2017 Duración: 01h25min

Vanessa Van Edwards bills herself as a “behavioral investigator” - what that means is that she is absolutely amazing at unpacking what makes people do the things they do and turning that into proven, actionable techniques for others to hone their own people skills. She’s written for publications like CNN, Fast Company and forbes and is the author of the brand new (and incredibly good) book “Captivate: The Science Of Succeeding With People.” You’ve heard me talk many times about the critical importance of soft skills in building a successful career as a creator, and Vanessa is THE authority on this mega-important topic. Today on the podcast, * She talks about the difference between decoding and encoding emotional signals and how to apply that idea - for example, monitoring the micro-emotions that you are encoding with your body language and facial expressions (if you suffer from RBF this segment is for you!) * Tons of amazing little hacks that will help you hone your people skills. As just one example that tak

  • How iJustine Built Her Digital Empire

    12/04/2017 Duración: 01h13min

Justine Ezarik aka iJustine is one of the OG YouTube stars-- one of the very few people who have been on the platform for over a decade. You may remember her from her first big hit, her “300 page iPhone bill” video way back in 2007 or from literally streaming her entire life for 6 months, and since then she’s had several other hits that helped her build a huge following based off the kind of DIY hustle that I absolutely love-- for example her early videos were shot with a $400 point and shoot and a green rug from Ikea that served as her “green screen.” She’s one of the people who blazed the trail for the YouTubers and vloggers of today, and she’s parlayed that into a ton of opportunities outside YouTube including appearances on shows like Law & Order and Criminal Minds as well as being named by Time as one of the top 100 most influential people to 18-34 year olds. Today on the podcast, * She talks about how she got her start in her hometown of Pittsburgh-- she didn’t need to be in New York, LA or SF to ma

  • How To Get The Press + Public To Notice Your Work w/ Ryan Holiday

    05/04/2017 Duración: 01h36min

Ryan is an author, entrepreneur and one of the sharpest marketing minds out there. He got his start working for bestselling authors like Tucker Max and Robert Greene and has since worked with folks like Tony Robbins, Tim Ferriss, Evan Carmichael, and John Grisham among many others - and he’s written 5 books now including TWO last year: Ego Is The Enemy and The Daily Stoic. This episode was originally recorded back in 2012 when he was promoting “Trust Me I’m Lying,” which was his first book - releasing an audio version now as many of you have requested. Today on the podcast, * Why Ryan dropped out of college at 19 when he realized that he had better opportunities - specifically to go work for American Apparel, where he was Director of Marketing during the era in which they were on fire and really driving a huge part of youth culture * He says “You are your own chief marketing officer” - a great way to capture something that only becomes more true with time, which is that creators have an imperative to PROMOTE

  • How To Be A World-Class Creative Pro w/ Joe McNally

    29/03/2017 Duración: 01h11min

Joe McNally is one of the most accomplished photographers of his generation, with a list of achievements that I couldn’t possibly do justice to in this little intro. He’s one of the few people who have managed to be super successful in both journalism and commercial photography, and a few of the highlights of his insane career are working with clients including FedEx, Sony, GE, Adidas and Epson; working as LIFE Magazine’s only staff photographer; shooting cover stories for the likes of Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and Time among many many others; authoring three books on photography and creating several high-profile projects such as the incredibly powerful collection “Faces Of Ground Zero” honoring the first responders to the 9/11 attacks.  Today on the podcast, * He talks about something a lot of people think or claim to possess but not so many actually do, which is tenacity. He has some great stories about being - as he says - “pitbull when he has a camera in his hands” and doing whatever it takes to get th

  • How To Stop Waiting And Start Doing w/ Roman Mars

    22/03/2017 Duración: 50min

Roman Mars is the host of the wildly popular design podcast “99% Invisible” and has been called “the Ira Glass of design.” With several hundred episodes in the can over its six years in existence, it’s covered everything from “Unsung Icons of Soviet Design” to Love Park’s place in skateboarding history to DIY space suits, all through the same lens of - as he says - “telling stories that make you notice and appreciate the world in a different way,” drawing attention to the world of design around us that is 99% invisible (hence the title of the show). He’s also the creator of the world’s most popular design-focused TED Talk and co-founder of the podcast collective Radiotopia. Today on the podcast, * He says that “lack of success gives you a certain amount of freedom” - I love this because I see so many people stressing about the fact that they aren’t a household name yet - embrace it! This is your chance to try crazy, cool stuff - and if you mess it up then it doesn’t matter because nobody’s watching. * We get

  • Scott Dadich: Gut, Heart, and Head Alignment

    16/03/2017 Duración: 44min

Scott Dadich is a designer, filmmaker and entrepreneur. He’s currently the co-CEO of Godfrey Dadich Partners, a design, content and strategy firm. Prior to that he worked at Conde Nast where he was the editor of Wired and helped Conde Nast build out their digital strategy including the tablet editions of their magazines (and if you remember when those came out, they were incredible products that were among the first things really felt tablet native). He’s also the creator of the amazing new Netflix series “Abstract: The Art Of Design”-- I’m sure a lot of you have already binge-watched it, and if you haven’t then do yourself a favor and check it out ASAP. Today on the podcast, * We talk about why you should listen to your instincts or as he says, to the voice inside. He’s got a great term for this which is finding “gut/head alignment.” I’m a big advocate of learning how to hear and trust your instincts and this has been my biggest asset in many ways. * He gets into the making of “Abstract,” the transition from

  • When to listen to the voices in your head

    09/03/2017 Duración: 18min

I’ve talked before about that 3AM voice - the one that whispers in your ear that you're not good enough or that maybe you'll fail and so therefore it's probably better if you just quit now. That voice is what I call the gremlins. The gremlins are not your friend, and you've got to learn how to ignore them. But here's the thing - there’s another voice that often sounds very similar to the gremlin voice, except that it’s RIGHT. It’s the voice of your instincts, and its absolutely critical that you trust and listen to this voice. The key here is to learn how to tell the two apart, because like I said they can sound very similar until you learn how to train your inner ear to know the difference between gremlins and instincts - and in this episode I give you the details on how to do exactly that. • Debbie Millman: If not now, when?

    02/03/2017 Duración: 01h03min

Debbie Millman is currently the Editorial and Creative Director of Print Magazine, but she has an insane track record going back decades: she’s the author of 6 books including “How To Think Like A Great Graphic Designer,” a prolific design writer in outlets like NYT, Fast Company, and Design Observer, chairs the Masters In Branding program at SVA (co-founded with Steven Heller), and hosts a long running podcast called “design matters” which has done 265 episodes over 10 years with legends and icons like Michael Beirut, Stephen Heller, Chip Kidd, Massimo Vignelli, Isaac Mizrahi and Malcolm Gladwell. Today on the podcast, * She says that “confidence is overrated.” This is something I know a lot of you struggle with and I love how she talks about this. Confidence is created by repeatedly doing something, and if you’ve never done something before how could you have confidence? Confidence - in her view - is the easy part. It’s finding the courage to do the thing when you DON’T have confidence that is the gamechang

  • The What, Why, and How of Personal Style

    22/02/2017 Duración: 19min

  • Adrian Grenier: You can’t scale if you do it alone

    16/02/2017 Duración: 01h22min

You may know Adrian as the star of Entourage and The Devil Wears Prada, but he also has a lengthy history as a documentarian and entrepreneur who’s made a lifelong habit out of going around, over and through the various gatekeepers that stood between him and his goals. You’ll hear a lot of familiar themes come up in this conversation that are very core to me: the critical importance of building a community of peers who will motivate, inspire and help each other; how mentorship can be a catalyst for progress; and the drive for continuous and never-ending self-education. Today on the podcast, * Why Adrian is a passionate learner, yet dropped out of college when he found that the traditional educational system wasn’t actually educating him * We get into his history as a documentarian - for example, how he got the call for Entourage while trying to sneak into Cuba to make a documentary * How creativity can play a vital role in driving social change. Our special guest Dune Ives of The Lonely Whale Foundation talks

  • Caterina Fake: Teach Yourself

    09/02/2017 Duración: 01h13min

Caterina Fake is best known for being the co-founder of Flickr, which pioneered a ton of the things that we now take for granted on the internet: social networking, tagging, and content surfacing algorithms to name just a few. But like many of us, her career path has been - to say the least - unpredictable. On the way to becoming the co-founder of Flickr, Caterina Fake explored everything from banking to graphic design to writing novels, and she’s now the Chairman of the Board for Etsy, a board member at Creative Commons, and on the board of advisors for the Berkeley School of Information. And while there's a narrative in our culture that this sort of winding path indicates that something went wrong, I believe the opposite - I believe that it creates the sort of eclectic, versatile people who will (like Caterina) thrive in the new "skill economy." Today on the podcast, * How Caterina ended up co-founding Flickr and ultimately selling it to Yahoo even though she grew up as a self-described “artsy girl” - a far

  • Elle Luna: Should vs Must

    02/02/2017 Duración: 01h18min

If you’ve ever asked yourself - as almost all of us have - “how can I find and follow my calling and my passion,” then you’re going to get a lot out of this conversation. Elle has a book describing her own search for an answer to this question which is called “The Crossroads of Should And Must” which explores the tension between the expectations that parents, friends, and culture put on us (what she calls “should”) and who we are and what we know to be true (what she calls “must”).  Today on the podcast, * She breaks work down into 3 categories: jobs, careers and callings. So many of us are stuck in one of the first 2, looking for a way to get to the 3rd. * Accountability comes up again - a common theme in a lot of these conversations as a really key part of the creative process, to help get us across the finish line and actually COMPLETE our ideas. For Elle, the key is attaching a human to it - she says “if someone I love is counting on me to deliver something, I won’t let them down.” * Another familiar them

  • Gretchen Rubin: Think about milestones, not finish lines

    26/01/2017 Duración: 01h07min

Gretchen Rubin is the author of several blockbuster NYT bestsellers (Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier At Home) which have sold millions of copies worldwide. If you notice a common theme of “happiness,” that’s because Gretchen is one of the world’s foremost “happiness experts.” Today on the podcast, * Gretchen talks about her concept of “drift." Drift is what happens when we take the path of least resistance, which avoids friction in the short term but often leads to unhappiness in the long term * She also gets into several of her “personality frameworks” like obliger, upholder, rebel, questioner.  * We talk about accountability: “A lot of people who are frustrated with themselves just need accountability.” Boom.
