  • Te Rauparaha Biography

    In the late 1860s Tamihana, the son of Te Rauparaha the Ngati Toa chief, wrote a 50,000-word account of his legendary father’s life. The original manuscript is held in the Sir George Grey Special Collection, part of the Heritage Collections at Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero the Central City Library. In this track Haunui Royal talks with Ross Calman who has recently released a new, and much needed translation of this biography. discover.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/iii/enc…3807693 Ross Calman (Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Raukawa-ki-te-tonga, Ngāi Tahu) is a Wellington-based writer, editor and translator, and a descendant of Te Rauparaha. In 2015 Ross was the recipient of an Auckland Library Heritage Trust Scholarship, which enabled him to undertake research visits to Auckland to view the original manuscript.   • Rock Sonata no. 2 by Jenny McLeod

    On Thursday 29 October Brazilian pianist Camila de Oliveira performed a programme called "When the serious finds the rock 'n' roll". Her programmed featured New Zealand Composer Jenny McLeod's dynamic Rock Sonata no. 2. This was written in 1987 and commissioned for pianist Rae De Lisle. The composer has generously authorised Auckland Libraries to podcast this work.

  • Master of Czech Folk Music - 19 November

    To conclude our Thursday Heritage Concert series for 2020 The Kotuku Quintet presented a programme called "Master of Czech Folk Music" on the 19 November where they performed the wonderful Dvorak Piano Quintet in A major op. 81. It is written in four movements: Andante; Dumka: Andante con moto; Scherzo-furiant. Molto vivace; Finale. Allegro. The Kotuku Quintet are: Simon Ansell (violin), John Seagar (violin), Judith Gust (viola), Sally-Anne Brown (cello), Louise Webster (piano) Programme notes: Dvořák’s Quintet was written 1887 while the composer was living on his brother-in-law's estate at Vysoká, a country village not far from Prague. Written during a period of contentment, this popular work shows a composer at the height of his creative powers and it is regarded as one of the finest works in the piano quintet genre, alongside the quintets of Schumann, Brahms and Shostakovich.
