Old Ladies Pickin' Chickens - Grey Eagle
01/11/2012PigAnkle - recorded 1991 - Kirk Hunter- fiddle, David Allen - Banjo, RIchard Chance - Guitar. Learned Pickin' Chickens from a recording of Allen St., as well as from my good friend, Bob Atchison. I learned this unusual version of Grey Eagle from an old timer in Mtn.View during the spring Folk Festival. It is somewhat similar to the transcrition in the Christeson's "Old Time Fiddler's Repertoire." I can't believe 1991 was THAT long ago!!

Ladies on the Steamboat
10/09/2012During the Sept. 5-8,2012 J.P. Fraley Festival, two Cowan Creek students (young Joseph Cobb and considerably older Pat (a.k.a. hummyfan--who won't reveal her age) played in a jam session with a "DREAM TEAM" made up of wonderful old-time Kentucky fiddlers & teachers: John Harrod, Jessie Wells, Bobby Taylor, Bob Buckingham, Jim McCown---and a Missouri resident, fiddler Bill Ray. As you listen to us zipping through "Ladies on a Steamboat," notice the middle part of the tune when the teachers dropped out of the tune leaving the students to play the tune through once ( AABB) before jumping back in. That festival was the best music festival ever! I'd like to thank the organizers and the staff at Carter Caves State Park (Olive Hill, KY) for making it so special.
