  • Catherine de'Medici

    09/04/2017 Duración: 01h06min

Catherine de Medici was a powerful figure in 16th century Europe, as the Queen consort of France from 1547 to 1559, and then as the Queen Mother from 1559 until her death in 1589. Her origin story is actually super scary. Starting as a really rich orphan whose life was constantly threatened, she was saved by her friends in high places (ie: The Pope). Then, after becoming queen of France, she was a great patron of the arts and culture, and helped to shape the cultural landscape of France during her lifetime. She was also an absolute force to be reckoned with who took no shit. She played a major role in the affairs of France, from her husband's succession to the throne in 1547 to her son's accession in 1589. From her marriage to King Henry II to her death, Catherine de Medici was a crucial figure in the history of Renaissance Europe, and her influence is still felt today. • Lucrezia Borgia

    26/03/2017 Duración: 33min

Lucrezia Borgia has been given a really unfair reputation in history. Poisoner, brother "lover", and all around scandalous. Sorry to tell you, most of these are likely very untrue. Born to an Italian cardinal, Rodrigo Borgia, her life began as a scandal. Famously, cardinals aren't supposed to have families. But this one sure did. Lucrezia was very much loved by her father who eventually went on to become Pope Alexander VI aka Pope Daddy. Her family was a scandal at every turn, but was Lucrezia an active participant in these scandals, an innocent bystander or a pawn in the games of the powerful men in her family? Due to the (most certainly false) story of Lucrezia being an infamous poisoner, we're pairing this episode with a cocktail simply called Poison, which is made with vodka, orange liqueur, lemon, and soda water. So, drink up queens. Queens podcast is part of Airwave Media podcast network. Please contact advertising@airwavemedia.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Want more Queens? Head t

  • Cleopatra

    20/03/2017 Duración: 58min

It's the second episode of Queens Podcast, y'all! And today we're pairing a classic glass of red wine with the one and only Cleopatra! Cleopatra is one of the most iconic figures in history. She was the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, ruling around 51 to 30 B.C.E. During her reign, she worked to bring Egypt back to its former glory and restore its economy. She was also the lover of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. And while her love affairs seem to be what people want to talk about, she was so much more than her relationships. Cleopatra was known for her intelligence, cunning, and ambition. She was able to speak multiple languages and was well-educated. She was also a great negotiator, successfully negotiating favorable terms for Egypt with the major force of the time, Rome. The legacy of Cleopatra is one of intelligence, bravery, and power. Although she died at the age of 39, she left a lasting impression on history. Her story has been told in books, films, and plays, and her name is still widely known today. Q

  • The Lady Jane Grey

    05/03/2017 Duración: 49min

Could you imagine being the Queen of England for a week and 2 days? Would it be worth losing your head over? Probably not, but unfortunately, Lady Jane Grey wasn’t given much choice, thanks to the folks she called family.  Perhaps doomed from the start because of her overly ambitious parents, at least they gave her a decent education before they married her off to Guildford Dudley in a plot for the throne.  After her cousin Edward dies, Jane is whisked away to the Tower of London to be made queen, only to be quickly condemned and sentenced to death when Mary Tudor steps in to reclaim the crown. Talk about drama! Listen in and make yourself a Greyhound, a tart yet simple combo of vodka and grapefruit juice, as we recall the not-so-happy life of the “Nine Days Queen,” Lady Jane Grey.   In this episode, you’ll also hear: Being royal adjacent with shitty parents  Poor Baby Jane vs. Mary Tudor  Dying a martyr at the Tower of London Must-listen moments:  [00:06:53] It's also worth noting that she was born aro
