Mahalaya is the day when the mourning or Shraddha Paksha ends, and the day is also called as Sarvapitri Amavasya. Goddess Durga is said to travel to earth on the day of Mahalaya. The Jackal and The Peahen A Jackal and a peahen are friends, and often eat together. The Peahen once eats plums and sows the seeds of the plum into the ground. She tells the Jackal that she is acting on the advise of her mother: In time, the trees grow tall and big and start yielding fruits. They both get drown in the river. Other two goats on the other hand decide to cross the bridge but they realise that instead of fighting it is better to find a way to cross the bridge. One goat squats and the other crosses over the first goat and thus they are able to cross the bridge. This is a story from the life of the Bodhisatta. Once a King decides to build a new palace, for which his workers decide to cut down a huge Sal tree. But a spirit resides in the tree, and it is worried that the younger trees that have grown around the big tree will also be destroyed int the process. He pleads with the King to spare the other trees. What does the King do? The moral of this story is that one should care for others- and that will not go in vain.
