MyNDTALK - Do You Really Get Me? Finding Value in Yourself and Others
02/10/2015 Duración: 05minDo You Really Get Me? Finding Value In Yourself and Others Through empathy and connection psychologists use the term "Theory of Mind" to describe our natural tendency to make assumptions about what others think and how they feel about us based on the tone of their voice, facial expressions, and body language. These cues either signal us to open up further and make a connection or to put up a wall to protect ourselves from rejection. But it is also easy to misinterpret these cues and become unnecessarily guarded, such as when someone appears to be angry with us and we later learn they were just having a bad day and the negative signs we were picking up really had nothing to do with us. The more emotional baggage we bring to our interactions, the more likely we are to negatively misinterpret other people's feelings and the more disconnected from them we become. In this groundbreaking conversation, Joseph Shrand, MD, instructor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and Leigh Devine talks about how to set as

When a beloved pet passes away, people often resort to incorrect mechanisms to deal with the grief, such as trying to move too quickly past the loss dismissing the real impact), or even attempting to replace the pet immediately. However, these are merely two myths out of six that the authors discuss and dismantle in The Grief Recovery Handbook for Pet Loss. Based on the authors' Grief Recovery Method®, this book addresses how losing a pet is different from losing a human loved one, and ultimately, how to move on with life.

MyNDTALK - Stay - Jennifer Michael Hecht
19/09/2015 Duración: 01h00sStay! A History of Suicide and The Philosophies Against It Worldwide, more people die by suicide than by murder, and many more are left behind to grieve. Despite distressing statistics that show suicide rates rising, the subject, long a taboo, is infrequently talked about. In this sweeping intellectual and cultural history, poet and historian Jennifer Michael Hecht channels her grief for two friends lost to suicide into a search for history's most persuasive arguments against the irretrievable act, arguments she hopes to bring back into public consciousness. From the Stoics and the Bible to Dante, Shakespeare, Wittgenstein, and such twentieth-century writers as John Berryman, Hecht recasts the narrative of our "secular age" in new terms. She shows how religious prohibitions against self-killing were replaced by the Enlightenment's insistence on the rights of the individual, even when those rights had troubling applications. This transition, she movingly argues, resulted in a profound cultural and moral loss

His mind buzzed of melodies which, when he could later talk, he put to words. A true prodigy, his voice has become one of the most recognizable on earth. Anthony s parents, also performing artists, passed on their talent and passion to Anthony. But it was more than genetic inheritance that spurred the prodigy to greatness; it was his innate talent and his spiritual belief that he was destined to become this special performer. Anthony never learned how to play an instrument nor read music, yet his acutely tuned ear tells him when there is a sour note played by a violist in a full philharmonic orchestra. The streets of Brooklyn became his first stage as he gathered under the street lamps to harmonize with friends, who later on became known as The Imperials. A teenage heart throb, he set the radio on fire with his smooth, savvy voice that could sing three octaves and a falsetto.

MyNDTALK - Healing Healthcare - Dr. Jeffrey Kane
04/09/2015 Duración: 01h01minHealing Healthcare Today's guest asks and answers an interesting question – can healthcare be healed? Don't miss Healing Healthcare with Dr. Jeffrey Kane - "Not long ago, "bedside manner" was a physician's most potent medicine. Now that skill has dwindled to bland, generic amiability, and has been all but lost behind today's compelling healthcare technology. The bedside manner's shrinkage would be tolerable if medical high tech could cure everything, but these amazing tools are alarmingly cost-ineffective in treating most patients--those who suffer from chronic, incurable illnesses and the effects of detrimental lifestyles. Paying far too much for too little return, Americans are understandably demanding healthcare reform, which we're told lies in rearranging national finances. But beyond financial adjustment, authentic reform will have to come from reinstating ancient, intimate healing relationships between patient and doctor.
