On today’s show, we talked to Mark Bell, the founder of Super Training Gym, Power Magazine and inventor of the Sling Shot. Mark is a former professional wrestler. He began lifting weights at age 11 and entered into powerlifting when he was 13. He has lifted 1,025lb squat, a 832lb bench press and a 738 lb deadlift. He explained to us how weight lifting affects your body. “Your arms are like shock absorbers,” he told Rob. “Your biceps and your forearms are there to help you absorb the shock of the weight on the way down.” Mark is pretty flexible with his diet, though he is a proponent of the Ketogenic diet. “We have become so addicted to refined sugars. That’s one of the most important things to cut out of your diet.” He believes the benefits to building muscle are much more extensive than merely engaging in cardio. “If you gain 5 lbs of muscle, it changes your metabolism in big ways,” he said. • OSF046: Do Fitness Apps Make You Fat?

    14/04/2015 Duración: 56min

Is your fitness app making you fat? Nir Eyal, an author at Tech Crunch, thinks the apps we rely on to motivate us and track our progress are actually detrimental to our health. Why? Because they don’t differentiate between good and bad calories, encourage over-exercising and make fitness feel like a chore. “The best exercise in the world is the one you actually like,” he tells Rob. A writer for TechCrunch, Forbes, Psychology Today and frequent speaker at Fortune 500 companies, Eyal used to be severely overweight until he figured out what exercises he loves and began focusing on the kind of diet he wanted, rather than the kind of diet he thought he should have. This is an interesting episode for anyone who has wrestled with motivational issues — i.e., all of us! Check out more of Nir Eyal’s writing at nirandfar.coom. 31/03/2015 Duración: 55min

When Jonathan first moved to LA he was rail thin at 6’2” and just 156 pounds. • OSF041: Uncovering the Secrets of the Meat Industry with David Maren

    03/03/2015 Duración: 01h03min

What does it really mean when a chicken is labeled cage-free, free-range or pasture-raised? Why does processed chicken contain so much water? How can you decipher the dizzying array of organic, non-GMO labels on meats at your local grocery store? Today we’ve invited David Maren to help make our shopping experience a lot less confusing. Maren grew up a rebel in a vegetarian family. At age 12, he started building mobile chicken pens and getting involved in alternative forms of meat production. After marrying into a family of farmers in Virginia, he founded “Tendergrass Farms” to form a bridge between family farmers and food enthusiasts. Tendergrass is now a cooperative network and distribution channel for family-owned farms who raise their meat the traditional way: on the pasture, grass-fed, with no antibiotics or growth hormones. In this interview with Open Sky Fitness, David talks about why "cage-free" is a meaningless label for poultry, why chickens should eat worms and how he built an organic empire.

Dietary trends have changed so much in the past fifty years, it can be hard for anyone to keep up - much less older Americans. In this interview, Rob Dionne (Open Sky CEO) explains how he’s broached the subject with his folks. Rob grew up in a big, working-class family in New York where pasta was celebrated and no one would “tsk” you for taking seconds, or thirds. “My Mom would cook for hours and feed close to twenty people on Sundays,” he said. But when Rob’s Dad had a heart attack when he was still in high school, his family started looking more closely at what they were eating. Like many Americans, they had been told that fat was bad, carbs were good and red meat caused high cholesterol, which led to heart attacks. “By the time I was in college, I was learning more about nutrition but mostly what I knew was to stay away from cake and sweets. So I would tell my Dad to not eat that, but at that time we thought whole gr
