Unspoiled! The Dresden Files

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, lovely listeners! Do I have an episode for you. This is the one where Harry Dresden rides a zombie T-Rex. This is flat-out one of the most memorable scenes in the series, and one of my favorite things about it, is that it doesn't happen until Book 7. It's a really slow burn to get to this point, and by the time we get something so over-the-top, we've been through enough with Harry that we feel like we've really earned this moment. And I mean, let's talk about Butters for a second, because he's really the MVP here, isn't he? He's the beating heart at the center of it all. Heh. I just love that he gets to be so crucial here, and that he remembers how to use basic magic to defend himself, even during some of the most chaotic moments of the series. And lastly, we have Morgan. It's the chapter we've all been waiting for. Or at the very least, one of the chapters we've all been waiting for. RoShawn thought that she'd gotten hit with quite a wallop at the beginning of this trio of chapters, when Harry gets foiled by Cowl and discovers that Bob the Skull has been stolen, but she was very unprepared for how this was all going to end. She says that she actually had to put down her book and walk away one point because it was just too much. As it turns out, Sheila is not real. Sheila is merely a projection, a hallucination, a vision...call it what you will. Harry has been fooled for half a book by the demon living in his own head, and the lie it is telling him is so convincing that he's almost ready to jump onto a non-existent fire escape to flee from a non-existent fire. Honestly, the whole thing is kind of sad, because Harry really thought that he had met someone who could be special to him, and as much as I didn't really care about Sheila, he deserves some nice happy things in his life

Hey everyone! So it's time for the next installment of The Dresden Files, and this time Harry makes a bit of a boo boo. I mean, it's not his fault. Obviously. Cowl was there to fuck his shit up. But that does not change the fact that the Wild Hunt is now loose in Chicago, and technically Harry was the one to bring it here. well, to bring him here; Der Erlking is nobody to fuck with.Speaking of people who are not to be fucked with, the Red Court has caused such devastation that the war is all but over. There are still the senior council members of the White Council left, but for Chrissakes, they ask Harry to join up. Literal thousands of people died as collateral damage in an attack using sarin gas, and it's really so brutal that it's hard to wrap your head around. I hope that you all enjoy the episode, and I will see you soon with a new one!

This episode has one thing happen that RoShawn and I don't really care about (a make-out session with Shiela), something we mildly care about (a discussion about life without death between Harry and Kumori), and something we care deeply about (finding out that the White Council isn't doing so hot). There's a lot happening here and the degrees of relevance to the main plot are difficult to distinguish at this point. I'm really curious about what you all thought about the talk that Harry and Kumori have, because goddamn did that shit irritate me. Hello, rational person here! Setting aside that the concept of death is a totally necessary counterbalance to life, what about the impractical nature of ceaseless growth? Ugh I got so mad, y'all. Hey you! I'm so late! This episode was supposed to post this morning to iTunes, but due to a very busy weekend and celebrating my birthday on Monday, I fell dreadfully behind so please forgive me. There will still be a missing WestWorld episode for those who may have missed the Facebook post or Twitter message about it, due to RoShawn and I needing a mental health day due to...current events. This episode is a bit of calm before more storming (speaking of storms, there's some nice atmosphere in this episode as RoShawn's mic picks up all the thunder happening outside) and Harry gets to celebrate his birthday. Kind of. At the very least, he gets a nap and a little time in a virtual hot tub. That's not so bad, right? I mean sure, there's a fallen angel there the whole time, but...nothing's perfect. POLKA WILL NEVER DIE!Poor Butters in this section, amirite? The dude gets yanked out a basement window by his HAIR by a horde of zombies, beaten up by a dark wizard, and then forced to endure a soulgaze he will never be capable of forgetting with said wizard. All in all, it has been a pretty crappy day. Meanwhile, Harry isn't faring so much better. His confidence in his magic –at least in his FIRE magic– has taken a hit, plus he's injured and exhausted. So maybe we can forgive Thomas for taking some liberties with Harry's medications? Because this dude wasn't gonna slow down, and that would have done everyone more harm than good. When this section leaves off, the city is shrouded in darkness as the Corpse-taker and Grevane battle it out in the street, using zombies and ghosts for armies. It's time for the chapters where Harry finally starts to get a clue as to what's going on with the necromancers, thanks in large part to the generosity of Queen Mab. Turns out, the deal that Harry thought he had with Mavra is pretty much bullshit because what she's asked him to do will inevitably result in his death as well as the death of everyone he loves and cares about, including Murphy, whom he thought he was protecting. So yeah, Mavra can kick rocks and Harry is going to do all he can to keep the Word from falling into the wrong hands. Only problem is, he doesn't know how to get the Word first, and the only piece of information he has is a bunch of numbers that don't mean anything to him. Hopefully they don't mean anything to the necromancers, either, or else Harry is in big trouble. Oh wait. There's a horde of undead chufflign towards his house. I guess he's already in big trouble. Hey there, fine folks. It's time for the next installment of The Dresden Files, and I'm here to tell you that Harry isn't ready, and neither is RoShawn. Let's have a moment of silence for Bock, who only just got done telling Harry that he causes too much trouble and had better not come back to the store anymore when Harry starts causing trouble again. For fuck's sake, he sends a ghoul flying through a wall and right across the street into the facing building. Harry only just manages to get out of this scrape thanks to John Marcone swooping in with Ms. Gard and saving his ass, but it's not going to come without a price. Marcone tells Harry that the pool of cold energy he felt on Wacker was the result of something happening to one of his associates, and he needs Harry to look into it. This episode, Harry wanders around Chicago looking for the spots of dark energy that he was directed to by Morty's ghosts, and the second stop at the Field Museum turns out to be a crime scene. Not just any crime scene, either; a scientist was murdered in one of the offices in an incredibly grisly way that requires certain body parts to be displayed in a baggie beside the corpse in the morgue. Yeesh. Harry discusses things with Rawlins, a cop who knows that what Harry deals with is real because he himself came face to face with a monster years ago that only got stopped by a shotgun full of rock salt. The next stop is the morgue, and Harry brings Butters so they can try to figure out what the hell Grevane wanted him for. Someone else wants to get i

Lovely listeners, RoShawn and I are back and we hope you missed us! We're getting into the next phase of the story here as Harry borrows a giant, cumbersome SUV and tries to understand his brother a little better. While these chapters aren't action-heavy, there's a lot going on character-wise which I really enjoyed. Harry going on the run with Thomas was particularly revealing, not just for Thomas but for Harry himself. It's clear as day to Thomas how Harry feels about Karrin, but Harry has talked himself out of the possibility of anything happening. Understandably, Thomas finds this infuriating because if fighting for his relationship with Justine were an option, he would absolutely do it. In his opinion, Harry is just taking it all lying down. Then there's the little side story that's bothering RoShawn; who the hell beat the shit out of Harry's car? There doesn't seem to be any supernatural force behind the attack, and she can't figure out why they wouldn't have fucked up the engine. So what is going on th

Hey there, you wonderful listeners you. I feel sure that I've used the art for this post before, but it's hard to find good fanart of Billy & Georgia, and the many of the Butters illustrations have spoilers. So please forgive me if I'm recycling. These three chapters are mostly Butters-free, because Harry drops the little guy off at his stronghold of an apartment (not exactly the fortress RoShawn was expecting) and goes to Bock Ordered Books to find a copy of a book that Grevane was tapping on his leg when he attacked Butters. That is where Harry meets Sheila, a lovely store clerk who thinks that Harry is robbing the place at first, then helps him to locate the super-rare and super-expensive copy of Die Lied Der Erlking. Then Harry gets jumped by two mysterious figures outside the bookstore, who try to take the book away, or at least try to convince Harry to destroy it. He's a little fascinated because the dark energy that surrounds them doesn't have the same nauseating quality that Grevane's did. Also, t

BUTTERS!I think we can all agree that Butters is one of the most loveable dorks ever, and I also think we can all agree that Harry better protect this little dweeb with everything he's got or we are all going to be majorly pissed. These three chapters all concern Butters and his sudden involvement in the plot, because this is no "Oh geez I got accidentally caught up on the periphery of Harry's adventure" kind of situation. Nope, it was pure dumb luck that Harry was at the morgue at all, because the Bad Guys(TM) come looking specifically for Butters. In fact, if anything it's HARRY who is getting caught up in the periphery of BUTTERS' adventure. What a fun little reversal. The final chapter in the trio is Harry trying to explain to Butters that there's a whole wild universe out there that Butters bumped up against when he said that the vampire bodies were "humanoid but definitely non-human", and even though Butters literally just watched a dead man sprint after their car, he has a hard time accepting it. IT IS FINALLY HERE! Y'all I am so excited about it! And how great is this illustration of Harry being super irritated with Thomas while Thomas just lounges nonchalantly next to a pair of forgotten black lace panties? These opening chapters are chock full of good stuff. First, Harry wants to murder Thomas, just a teensy bit. Then, Murphy announces to Harry that she's gonna go bang the shit out of Kincaid and asks him to water her plants. How coy. How sexy. Then, of course, is the whole thing with Bob. I was going to use an illustration of the Evil Bob scene, but shockingly enough came up empty on all my searches. Suffice it to say that Bob has a checkered past that Harry wasn't aware of, and that he's not precisely proud of his actions or associations during that time. In fact, he's SO not-proud that he's unwilling to open up the memories of that period until Harry issues him a direct order. Which Harry very soon regrets. Hope you enjoy listening!

Hey there, you beautiful, patient, good-hearted people. I'm here with the final episode of Blood Rites and I'm ready to bounce off the walls with excitement that Dead Beat is about to start. Don't mind me it's just that when [redacted] does that thing with [redacted] and we finally [redacted][redacted] it's SO GOOD. Okay so these chapters. Harry manages to get one over on Lord Raith, with a trick that's such a slow burn it's almost mean. Basically Harry doesn't need to beat Lord Raith, he just needs to weaken the vampire so completely that Lara can step in and totally enthrall him. Which she does. With relish. Meanwhile, Thomas has to be disinherited because it's so widely known how much Lord Raith hates his son that it would be suspicious if he's allowed to stay at home, so Thomas is about to move in with Harry. For a downpayment on rent, he pays off Harry's debt to Kincaid. Which should take care of the rent for the next 60 or 70 years. Meanwhile, some old shit is getting brought back up. Alright, listeners, it's almost the end of the 6th book in the series, and our valiant heroes are in some really deep shit. These 3 chapters are kind of just a series of unfortunate events. Harry and Karen get caught up in a gun fight that injures two people and causes Lara to have to clean up a mess instead of playing backup. Then he and Murphy get headed off by other bodyguards and Harry has to use a ton of energy to flip a car. Is it an amazing and awesome scene? Yes, absolutely. But would I have preferred he still had that energy to tap into when they ran into Lord Raith? You bet. Then there's the terrible scene where Murphy is being held hostage and Raith monologues for like, half an hour about how he's going to torture, rape, and eventually kill her. It's really hard to read and even harder to listen to Dresden's internal monologue about how he's helpless to act and Murphy is going to have to get herself out of this one. Thanks for nothing, Harry!

I am so late on this one, guys, and I'm so sorry. I edited the whole episode and then stopped to record Harry Potter live, and totally forgot to ever post it. I suck! Blerg. Anyway, I hope that you can all forgive me, and that you enjoy listening to RoShawn and I talk about the incredible fight scene between our quartet of good guys and the scourge of vamps. It's a pretty intense scene, with a strange peek into Harry's Sight which makes RoShawn question everything about Kincaid. In the end, though, she's really happy with how everything turned out, despite the slightly anticlimactic ending to Mavra's "life". RoShawn thought that Mavra would stick around, and is a little disappointed that such a good villain was dispatched so easily. Hi there, my lovelies! I'm comin at ya with the three chapters that set the table for our trio (well, quartet if you count the wheel man) of heroes to attack the scourge hiding in a homeless shelter. But first, we have some family drama to deal with as Murphy finds out her little sister is going to be marrying her ex-husband. Which really truly is SOME SHIT. RoShawn and I talk at length about how very not-okay that is, and how Murphy's mom is defending the baby sister way too much, but that's not really the main plot here so I will leave it at that. The main mystery here is the weird animosity between Ebenzer and Kincaid. RoShawn's ears perk up at the way Kinkaid calls him "Blackstaff" but she can't decide what that could possibly mean. It fits perfectly with what I thought was the most fascinating part of this trio of chapters, and that is the information that Bob relays to Harry after going out exploring in Mister's body. It's kind of infuriating, because there's a moment where he really gets the drop on Trixie and you think that dumbass is finally going to get what's coming to her. But it turns out that while Trixie may be a dumbass, she's very good at taking orders from smarter people, as well as good at messing up magic circles. Hey everyone! I think that the last post I did with an illustration of Kincaid, someone commented that they had been picturing him as a ginger while the illustration showed him as a blonde. I'm pretty sure they're right about how he's originally described, and this is a closer approximation of how I picture him than the last one. Younger, more clean-cut, and almost bored. These chapters are the ones where Harry introduces Murphy and Kincaid for the first time, and when he starts to realize what might be going on with the entropy curse. Unfortunately, there's not much of a chance to do anything about that last thing because Trixie Vixen sneaks up on him with a gun, but hey. Can't fault him on this one, he tried his best.
