If you heard the results of the Screeners’ box office wager, you know that Daniel was...less than pleased. Turns out he was so unhappy that he’s invented another contest just to redeem himself. This time, we’ll be picking Oscar nominees. The rules are similar to those for the box office wager, but Daniel has doctored them in his favor. Also: Money isn’t everything—or, at least, that’s what you have to tell yourself if you’re a fan of the recent adaptation of Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. Its opening weekend was a huge letdown from a box office standpoint, but the film does have one good omen on its side: It signals the time of year when the movies are sourced from books without pictures. Ready or Not isn’t exactly a summer blockbuster by normal box office standards, but it’s already earned twice its budget, so that’s something, right? It’s a horror comedy that uses a wedding dress as a murder weapon to kill rich people, so that has to at least be worth a Screenes review. And while we’re talking about murder, Netflix’s Mindhunter is back for its second season. Not everyone’s binged all of it yet, so no spoilers here, but enough of us liked the first one that it’s worth at least giving our first impressions. Everything comes in at least a pair in Hollywood, and this year’s novelty seems to be the classic rock ‘n’ roll montage set in England. First we had the Beatles bonanza that was Yesterday, and now there’s the Springsteen retrospective of Blinded by the Light. The dive into the catalogs of music greats is just the gimmick of these movies, though; they of course have their own story to tell. It’s August. It’s hot, and the studios don’t seem to be doing all that much to convince us to brave the walk from our cars to the theater. After the insanity that was the last Fast & Furious movie, what could they possibly think of next? If you said “they join the Space Force”, we applaud your creativity—that’s what we would have done, too—but apparently that’s not the answer. The answer is “turn Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham into a comedy duo” and name the movie like it’s some kind of variety show. What the title of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw lacks in brevity, it makes up for in absurdity. Oh well; it’s summer, so the Screeners will see anything. Comic-Con’s just wrapping up in San Diego, so now’s the perfect time to talk about all the hottest new trailers. Maybe we’ll even find out about Tyler’s latest cosplaying adventure. OK; we’ll talk about The Little Mermaid in due time, we promise. For now, though, Disney has remade an even bigger property in full live-ish action glory. These things are always risky, though, especially when the original Lion King was so beloved, and 90’s nostalgia is in its heyday. Don’t tune into this episode for a Jump Cuts or Flickchart segment, because there isn’t one. The schedule’s full enough as it is, since the Screeners are taking on both a Marvel movie and a Danny Boyle movie. Spider-Man: Far from Home is the first post- Endgame Marvel movie, so it either has a lot to live up to or has some ‘splainin’ to do, depending on your conclusions about Phase 3 of the MCU. It might not be the biggest Disney hit from the 90’s getting a live-action reboot this summer (which is a strange thought all by itself), but Aladdin is sure up there. Robin Williams sadly isn’t around to reprise his role as Genie, but Will Smith seems to be doing a passable job so far, if ticket sales are anything to go by. The Matrix movies weren’t violent enough for Keanu Reeves, so he went and got himself cast in a “real action” movie. That was five years ago, and now we have John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum. We’re not sure they needed the colon and the dash, but who are we to argue with marketers as successful as the geniuses behind the John Wick franchise? They’ve made three movies that have been well-received by everyone but Josh, so they must be doing something right. We promise there will be a movie review at some point in this episode, but it’s been so long since we’ve done a Flickchart segment—before the newest Screener joined, in fact—that we couldn’t resist fitting one in. It might take awhile to find two movies that Josh has seen, but stick with us here. OK, so the review. The Pokémon Company has conquered the crossover animé and Game Boy worlds, and they’ve tracked the movements of a generation by getting them to trade a real-time stream of GPS data for Pikachu-shaped pixels. Now, they’ve lent their IP to what passes for a live-action movie in the 21st century, Pokémon Detective Pikachu (as if we couldn’t tell it was a Pokémon movie without that lead-in). The only question left is whether a Pikachu-shaped stand-in for Ted will make more or slightly less money at the box office than Avengers: Endgame. No, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is not a sequel to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, despite the titles’ uncannily similar overuse of adverbs. It’s a movie about Ted Bundy from a somewhat new perspective—you know, just in case you needed an escape from the horrors of modern life. Two Screeners planted themselves on the couch to watch this for you, though, so the least you can do is tune in to see if you should do the same.
