One of the events opening the 2018 Brighton Festival, curated this year by artist David Shrigley, is "Pitch Perfect", a series of free concerts around the city by young classical performers. On Saturday afternoon they'll be performing at Brighton Museum and other locations, and earlier this week they played in the pod of the i360 on Brighton's sea front. Melita Dennett was there.... The Boy, The Piano and The Beach is a children's show by Lewes based Slot Machine Theatre, combining puppetry, dance and classical music. The performance, for ages six and upwards, runs at the Brighthelm Centre from Sat 5th to Monday 7 May. Melita Dennett met directors and performers Nicky Blackwell and Nick Tigg, along with their puppet Brenda the giant shiny worm, as they gave a brief performance outside Brighton's Jubilee Library. Ahead of the start of the Brighton Festival, this year's Guest Director David Shrigley joins Brighton Festival Chief Executive Andrew Comben for a conversation. Best known for his distinctive drawing style and works that make satirical comments on the absurdity of 21st-century society,  visual artist David Shrigley’s darkly humorous compositions reflect the inconsequential, the bizarre, and the disquieting elements of daily life. While drawing is at the centre of his practice, his work spans an extensive range of media including sculpture, large-scale installation, animation, painting, photography and music. Belgian theatre maker Yinka Kuitenbrouwer visited over 100 people to find out what "home" means to them – from newborns to pensioners, natives to immigrants, farmers to squatters. With the help of snapshots, quotes and a plate of biscuits, Yinka recalls her encounters in tellingly encyclopedic detail in this disarmingly simple and quietly impactful performance. Acclaimed photographer Eddie Otchere has set up a community darkroom – an open-access space in which the people of Brighton can capture, reflect on and share their experiences, celebrating what it is to be part of a community for Brighton Festival 2017. Brighton choreographer and designer Theo Clinkard joins Melita Dennett and Rebecca Sandells in studio to talk about the World Premiere of This Bright Field at Brighton Festival 2017. In Part one of the work audience members go on stage in small groups for an intimate encounter with Clinkard’s company of twelve international dancers.
