Ryan graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and served as an infantry officer. In 2007, he was severely wounded by a roadside bomb while conducting combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq, and ultimately lost a leg due to his wounds. Upon retirement from the Army, Ryan completed both an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Ryan resides in Oakland, California.
