  In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Scott Porter, past program director of the Greenville Orthopedic Surgery Residency and current Chief Diversity Officer of the Greenville Health System, and Dr. Charles Jobin, program director from Columbia Orthopedic Surgery Residency.  They have recently worked together to write "The Survival Guide to the Orthopedic Surgery Match."  We discuss the application and selection process from a program directors perspective.  Listen in for candid advice as we dive into several components of an application including board scores, letters of recommendation, and away rotations.

In episode 7, I chat with our new interns!  Sean Gao, Caleb Piatt, and JD Stevens discuss their strategies for 3rd and 4th year.  In particular, we touch on how they made the most of their base hospitals and chose where to rotate based on their personal strengths and weaknesses.  This is a great episode for preclinical students and clinical students alike.

Dr. John McPhilemy is the program director of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine orthopedic residency program. Beyond being an important part of the Philadelphia ortho scene, he has played a major role in the DO ortho world.  He has trained many generations of great orthopedic surgeons, many of whom have gone on to become program directors themselves.  After all these years, his passion is still educating the next generation.  Dr. McPhilemy and I discuss the importance of away rotations for the right "fit", his thoughts on choosing where to train, and how perspective is everything

In Episode 5, I talk to Ayesha Yahya, who will be an intern at WellSpan York Hospital this year.  She has had an unconventional road to Orthopedics.  Ayesha started her career as a researcher and got into medicine unsure of what specialty she would pursue.  Recently, Ayesha wrote a guest post on our blog about how to do research as a student.  During our podcast conversation, Ayesha shares her very personal story of how she chose orthopedics, found mentors to help guide her, and how she approached pursuing orthopedics after going unmatched.  Open eyed, honest perseverance is the theme of this episode and I hope you find it as inspirational and informational as I did.

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Joel Rush.  A past president of the AOAO, Dr. Rush is currently the program director of the Broward Health Orthopedic Surgery Residency in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  We discuss the implications of the upcoming single accreditation system, what he looks for in applicants, and how he approaches running an orthopedic residency.  

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Charles Mehlman, a Pediatric Orthopedic surgeon, from Cincinnati Children's Hospital.  Dr. Mehlman is a practitioner of what he calls the Trilogy of Medicine: Patient Care, Education and Research.  He is easily recognized at conferences by his cowboy hat and boots.  With a personality to match, he has a unique way of presenting common topics.  Listen in as we discuss the importance of research, how students can get involved, the value equation in medicine and much more.
