James Adomian is a man of many, many voices. A comedian by trade, he’s known for his incredible impressions of people like Bernie Sanders, Vincent Price, Jesse Ventura, and Mike “My Pillow” Lindell. When they sent over the list of comedians available to guest on my Live from Moontower TMH, his name jumped off the page. My friend Adam Cayton-Holland is a king of Denver comedy, as both the founder of the High Plains Festival and a member of the three-man comedy troupe the Grawlix. The Grawlix created, sold, wrote, and starred in the often slept-on but brilliant teacher comedy Those Who Can’t. Adam worked in Los Angeles, but never left Denver, and he lives there today with his wife and two kids. Rosebud Baker has a new special out called “Whiskey Fists,” which is odd because she’s been sober for years, and I’ve never seen her hit anyone. Not that it matters. What does matter is that she’s one of the best joke writers out there, has an undeniable stage presence, and has been through a lot in her life. She was a perfect TMH guest, as you’ll soon learn. We had so much fun, got to be better friends, and shared some brutal childhood experiences. Hooray! Comedian Chris Garcia grew up in Los Angeles, started out doing comedy in the Bay Area, and now lives here again. In fact, he and his wife live with their baby daughter Sunny in my old apartment! When he moved to the neighborhood he texted me the address and said, “Is this a nice area?” I texted back, “That’s my house!” We were good friends before but now we’re super tight, especially as we both have baby ladies to raise while telling dick jokes onstage. Dave Anthony’s podcast The Dollop, with Gareth Reynolds, is an internationally popular podcast that I find hilarious. As I say during this episode, the two-part one they did about Ronald Reagan, is maybe the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a podcast. Dave started out as a stand-up and moved into writing, becoming an actor along the way (He was Marc’s a-hole best friend in the television series “Maron”). I’ve been a big fan of Sam Tallent for many years, so it’s great to finally have him on the show. A hilarious comic and writer, Sam is hard to miss from his large size and many, many tattoos. A force onstage, he’s also a kind and humble guy with a lot of perspective. So, like so many of my guests, he’s terrible for this show. Shane Torres started doing comedy in Portland, Oregon after moving there from Fort Worth, Texas. He’s incredibly funny, and also one of the kindest and realest people I’ve ever known. That makes him terrible to be on the pod, but oh well (JOKE!). Shane blew up on the national scene when his joke about Guy Fieri went viral, and for good reason. It’s a monster. Caleb is a comedian/internet sensation/lifestyle expert, IMO. I first learned of him when a friend showed me his videos on twitter, all of which are gut-bustingly funny and very different than anyone else’s. Right before we started recording, Caleb said he heard I was in Provincetown. I said “Yeah, I was,” and he said, “It’s cool that you like gay people, but I don’t” (Caleb is gay). James was nice enough to open for me in Brea a couple weeks ago, and we got to know each other better on the drive there and back from LA. He comes from a staunch religious background, is married with a child on the way, and is hilarious. Rick Overton is a comic I’ve looked up to for a long time. He’s hilarious, he has an amazing perspective born of a long and storied career, and he’s optimistic. The last part of that fascinates me, because it’s something I’ve been grappling with a lot lately. Everything around us, news-wise, seems to veer towards being a shitshow, and it’s hard to hold on to hope. Before I had Rick on, I was reminded of a bit he had about laughing in the face of death. Doing that, he asserted, robs death and darkness of their power. Looking back, it wasn’t even a bit as much as him making a point before he started his jokes. Anyway, it stuck with me. Trevor Moore is probably best known for his work with The Whitest Kids You Know, a hugely popular sketch group who had a TV show and still perform together today. I broke into clubs in New York City opening for them way back in 2007/8, and it was one of the most fun times I’ve ever had. Trevor has gone on to do specials, a talk show, and even a children’s show that he cast me on as a goofy dad. Stick with the talented friends, kids!! Demi Adejuyigbe and I have at least one thing in common: No one knows how to say our last names. I first learned of Demi back when I was a frequent guest on @Midnight on Comedy Central, when he was a writer and online content-creator for the show. Kurt Braunohler and I have been friends since, what, 2006 I’d say? We ran around NYC and Los Angeles, drinking and doing comedy, as well as in several festivals. Megan Galley is a comedian who grew up in Indiana, went on to do comedy in Chicago, and since then has been on Comedy Central and Conan. She’s also a hilarious maniac, in the best possible sense. What can I say about Laraine that hasn’t been said? Hilarious, kind, legendary, seen it all, done it all, is somehow friends with Matt Braunger, the list goes on and on.
