Safe Outdoor Dogs Act update with Shelby Bobosky, Executive Director, for the Texas Humane Legislation Network
13/06/2022 Duración: 12minOn October 25, 2021, after the most contentious Texas legislative session in memory, the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act was signed into law. THLN never wavered during the six-year quest to pass this legislation, even when it was targeted by an extremist lawmaker and unexpectedly vetoed. Texas dogs and the communities where they reside deserve a common-sense, balanced policy governing the restraint of dogs outdoors. The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, which goes into effect January 18, 2022, achieves that by: Defining adequate shelter to protect dogs from extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and standing water. Previously, there was no definition for shelter, thus tethered dogs routinely perished from exposure. Requiring access to drinkable water. Before the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, state law did not include this vital requirement. Requiring safe restraints. The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act strikes the use of chains. Other means of restraint, such as cable tie-outs, may be used so long as they are correctly attached to a

22/05/2022 Duración: 06minCindy Myers Ambassador to Animals, Humans and Spirit I’ve always been a good listener. However, twenty years ago, I would have found it hilarious if you told me that I’d be working as an intuitive energy healer while living on an alpaca farm! But, here I am with a herd of 24 alpacas, 3 dogs and 3 cats working as a Medical Intuitive! I believe that the sum of our life experiences can lead us to our true calling in life. There are many paths to finding our way to our authentic selves. It took many years, multiple and diverse career paths, and tough life challenges to finding my true calling. The life lessons were invaluable that led me to this meaningful life. I learned about frequencies and Radars while working as an Engineer for the Navy and now I am a Radar! I learned all about stress and how harmful it is to our body, mind and spirit while being my mom’s caregiver through her final years. And there was an amazing gift I created out of the house fire I experienced due to an arsonist. Losing my belongings

What is a mast cell tumor with Dr. Laura Brown
15/05/2022 Duración: 09minIntroduction Mast cell tumors (MCTs) arise from malignantly transformed mast cells. In dogs, most of these tumors arise as primary tumors in the skin. They are the most common skin tumor in dogs, accounting for roughly 20% of all reported skin tumors.1 Any breed may be affected with MCTs, but certain breeds are predisposed, including golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, Boston terriers, boxers, and pugs. Pugs are more likely to have multiple MCTs at diagnosis (56% of pugs with MCT in one study), but these tumors demonstrate more benign behavior and rarely lead to death.2 MCTs can affect dogs of any age but typically affect middle-aged to older dogs. An underlying etiology for most tumors cannot be identified. Breed predilections support some component of underlying genetic causes. Mutations in the c-kit tyrosine kinase receptor, which can lead to malignant transformation of mast cells, are found in 25%–30% of intermediate to high-grade tumors.3,4 KIT mutations will be further discussed in regards to both p

My dog gets sick every morning on our walk. What do I do?
02/05/2022 Duración: 04minWhat to do when your dog is being sick? Reasons dogs are sick Food poisoning Eating too much or too quickly Eating new or unusual food Swallowing a poisonous substance Parasites Kidney, liver, or pancreatic disease Ear or balance problems Motion sickness If your dog has been sick a few times but otherwise appears well: Remove all food and water for two hours After this time, allow your dog to have small amounts of water — offer this half-hourly a few tablespoons at a time — but withhold food for a further 6-8 hours If your dog’s vomiting has stopped, reintroduce small meals (1-3 tablespoons) of a bland low-fat cooked food such as chicken or white fish and rice and or pasta every hour or two. Plain cooked egg is also suitable. Fats, dairy and raw meat should be avoided. If no further signs are seen, your pet can gradually return to a normal diet the following day. Give the food in 4-6 small meals and introduce gradually by mixing with the bland diet, increasing the proportion of normal diet with each subse

Fluff Trough owner Debra discusses the best dog feeder on the market
09/04/2022 Duración: 11minDID YOU KNOW THAT THE WAY YOUR PET EATS CAN AFFECT THE HEALTH OF BOTH THEIR SPINE AND MOUTH? Most domestic dogs and cats don’t eat how nature intended because traditional pet feeders force them to stand over a bowl, bending their head and neck down to eat at an unnatural and uncomfortable angle. To eat, dogs and cats have to use their entire jaw and head to get food in their mouth. After prey has been captured, dogs and cats eat lying down with their neck and back straight in order to protect their food. The position your pet eats can affect their spinal health, as well as contribute to oral health issues https://www.flufftrough.com/

What are the stages of grieving with Francesca Arnoldy, Professional Pet Doula.
14/03/2022 Duración: 09minWhat Are the Stages of Grief? Your feelings may happen in phases as you come to terms with your loss. You can’t control the process, but it’s helpful to know the reasons behind your feelings. All people experience grief differently. Though it it no longer considered the ideal way to think about grief, you may have heard of the stages of grief: Denial: When you first learn of a loss, it’s normal to think, “This isn’t happening.” You may feel shocked or numb. This is a temporary way to deal with the rush of overwhelming emotion. It’s a defense mechanism. Anger: As reality sets in, you’re faced with the pain of your loss. You may feel frustrated and helpless. These feelings later turn into anger. You might direct it toward other people, a higher power, or life in general. To be angry with a loved one who died and left you alone is natural, too. Bargaining: During this stage, you dwell on what you could’ve done to prevent the loss. Common thoughts are “If only…” and “What if…” You may also try to strike a deal

Teaching children on how to be pet owners with Executive Director Shelby Bobosky from the Texas Humane Legislation Network
06/03/2022 Duración: 06minAlthough young children shouldn’t be given total responsibility for pet care, learning the basics can keep both them and your pets safe and sound. If you’ve recently brought a cat or dog into your home, congratulations. Not only can a pet become a child’s best friend, but exposing young ones to an animal's germs actually may be healthy; a recent study1 found they help build up kids’ immune system. Having a pet is also a good way to teach kids responsibility. How much a child should be involved in pet care depends on his or her age. Babies and pets should not be left alone together. Toddlers need lots of supervision as they can be unintentionally rough. To them, pets are like moving stuffed animals. Megan J., a mother to a mother and pet parent to a 2-year old Siamese cat, says to teach gentleness, “Take [your child's] hand firmly and guide him through petting the dog/cat. Tell your child, ‘We touch the cat softly. We are nice to our cat,1 so that he hears positive words to go with the actions.” Teach compassi

How to teach your dog to shake in 2022
09/01/2022 Duración: 05minAfter training your dog a few basic commands like sitting and staying, you can move on to more advanced tricks, like teaching them to shake your hand (sometimes referred to as “giving a paw”). Whether you’re an experienced dog owner or a newbie, by following a few simple steps (and having some patience), your dog is well on their way to learning this cool new trick. As a bonus, this trained behavior comes in handy when you need to wipe off our dog’s muddy paws or even trim their nails. Steps to Teaching Your Dog to Shake Have your dog “sit.” Grab a treat and show it off before you hide it in your closed fist. Hold out your fist, palm facing up, at about your dog’s chest level. Your dog should naturally paw at your fist to get to the treat. When they do, open your hand and let them have the treat and give them plenty of praise. Repeat these steps several times until your dog “gets it.” Repeat steps 1–4, but this time, without holding a treat in your hand. As soon as your dog paws

Keep your pet safe from Holiday hazards with tips from Dr. Bonnie Bragdon, DVM, MS
19/12/2021 Duración: 14minThe holiday season is upon us, and many pet parents plan to include their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, it is important to try to keep your pet's eating and exercise habits as close to their normal routine as possible. Also, please be sure to steer pets clear of the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations. Be Careful with Seasonal Plants and Decorations Oh, Christmas Tree: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the tree water—which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset—from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria, and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe. Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats if
