Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic allergic type 2 inflammatory disease that is triggered by food and/or environmental allergens. It is characterized by a clinical and pathologic phenotype of progressive esophageal dysfunction due to tissue inflammation and fibrosis. EoE affects about 1 in 2,000 people in the United States, and its prevalence is increasing. Until recently, there were no FDA-approved therapies, and management was limited to dietary approaches, drugs such as proton pump inhibitors and topical corticosteroids, and esophageal dilation.
