  • CTS_ep 147 Dead of Night and Ghost Stories

    25/09/2018 Duración: 01h06min

Episode 147 gives you more to watch and more to think about. This is due in part to a small misunderstanding with your hosts, but it all works out in the end. The spoilers are kept pretty mild on “Ghost Stories” (2017) so that you might enjoy it more. Will and Richard go ahead and spoil “Dead of Night” (1977) since it’s a made-for-TV movie and um, well, from 1977. Some of it just feels like a mild “Twilight Zone” episode, but Richard uncovers a reference to a small town in Illinois that is not mild at all. Will has a ghost story of his own that involves flying pastries in New Mexico. Is “Breakin’ 2, Electric Boogaloo” finally up for discussion? Is “snow clone” a real thing? Listen and find out! Just remember that with Black Magic rituals, you never get exactly what you bargained for. Well, duh- Satanism! Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. • CTS_ep 146 Mandy

    18/09/2018 Duración: 01h17min

Episode 146 comes with some rules. First, you aren’t allowed to discuss “Mandy” (2018) by merely saying “it’s so batshit crazy that you just have to see it”. Although that is absolutely true, it’s worth more time and effort than that. Another rule is that if you have a band, you get five years or five albums. Deal with it. That’ll give your “farewell tour” some actual meaning! And, though “Mandy” breaks this rule, you gotta bring that movie in under 90 minutes. There are exceptions, and Nic Cage is one of them. So, whip up a batch of Cheddar Goblin, forge yourself an axe of some sort and get to hackin’…whatever takes your mind off of those animated interstitials! • CTS_ep 145 Horror Blind Spots

    11/09/2018 Duración: 01h19min

Episode 145 pulls back the curtain. As much as you might think your kind hosts have seen it all, there are actually horror movies that lurk in their “horror blind spots”. So- Will, Jolyon and Richard each chose to step up and watch one of those movies that should have been on the long list of “seen it”, but somehow were not. The reasons may include “dumb poster/box art" These include “Happy Birthday to Me”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, and “Final Destination”. You might have guessed that if Will were a film producer, he’d just tell them all, “You bring it in at 90 minutes and I don’t care what it’s about”. We’ve all shared that sentiment from time to time! In this episode, you’ll also get to hear real life in-flight horror stories your hosts lived to tell about! Now, it’s time to listen to the episode so the Taxman won’t come and ax your feet! • CTS_ep 144 Lifeforce

    04/09/2018 Duración: 01h15min

Episode 144 is a cautionary tale about what happens when a whole bunch of dudes and just one woman board a derelict space craft traveling in the tail of a comet and find giant bats and naked people and make the decision to bring all of that back to Earth with them. You know, that old yarn. You probably recognized that as “Lifeforce” (1985). This one had Tobe Hooper directing and was rolling with a deep budget. The cast was good, the story was unique and it all got crazy even beyond the nudity. “So, how did this thing lose money?” you are bound to ask. Maybe people weren’t ready for this. Maybe Ron Howard’s “Cocoon” stole the spotlight in a more palatable way. Who knows? One thing for sure is that this movie is a fun watch and the episode ain’t half bad either! So, get yourself a big bag of popped corne and be ready to do some remote viewing. Or just some listening. Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. • CTS_ep 143 Only Lovers Left Alive

    21/08/2018 Duración: 01h04min

Episode 143 could have been about something terrible, but Will saved the day! Instead of a bad sequel, your hosts will instead be talking about “Only Lovers Left Alive”. This is a 2013 film by Jim Jarmusch, a favorite director of all three of your hosts! If nothing else, this film will help you pass the time until the new Nic Cage horror film, “Mandy” comes out. The featured attraction is wandering and dark, cool and disaffected, and you might say that “nothing happens”. You might also say that “the characters just go somewhere else”. Jolyon points out that this is basically the plot of Jarmusch films…which is not a complaint. You know what IS a complaint, though? That “Halloween 5” wasn’t good. So, get all dressed up like Iggy Pop would do and get ready to do nothing and then go somewhere else. Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. • CTS_142 Annihilation

    14/08/2018 Duración: 01h09min

Episode 142 is a trip into the Shimmer. This is a rift, an event, a dimensional disruption, something like that. After some discussion of what they've recently watched, your hosts talk about “Annihilation” (2018). Will had really hoped Jolyon was talking about a movie called “Combat Shark”, but it was actually the far less exciting “Combat Shock”. Sorry, but feel free to make that one if you have a camera and a shark. When did Nolan’s Batman remind Will of the San Diego Chicken? Did “Annihilation” lack the positivity and hopefulness of Cronenberg’s “The Fly”? Find out these things and more when you listen to the episode! • CTS_ep 141 A Quiet Place

    31/07/2018 Duración: 01h10min

Episode 141 marks the triumphant return of Will, your missing co-host! But please don’t shout about it, the naked bat creatures (or praying mantis monsters, whatevs) might get you! Yes, after a little catching up, your hosts talk about “A Quiet Place” (2018). Even though Will watched almost nothing while in New Mexico, he has managed to get back into the swing with “Snowbeast”, which is actually just a “Jaws” ripoff. If you’ve already watched our featured attraction, you’ll probably understand that it brings to mind a number of questions about the perilous world in which the characters live. Of course your hosts try to answer them and maybe some of yours will get answered in that discussion! Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. • CTS_ep 140 Friday the 13th Parts 1-3

    24/07/2018 Duración: 01h36min

Episode 140 answers the question “What do young people think of those 80’s slasher movies?”. Well, you might be wondering HOW that question gets answered and it’s pretty simple. An actual young person, Ziggy (yes, that’s her real name) joins Jolyon and Richard right after watching the first three “Friday the 13th” movies for the first time. No kidding, and she kinda binged them too! What did she think of the conspicuous absence of the hockey mask for all of the first two and part of the third movie? You’ll find out! Did she hate Shelly? Well, that’s pretty obvious. Listeners might just have their minds blown when Jolyon points out the Friday movies' numerous continuity errors and sometimes total absence of the stuff. Oh, it’s bad! Know what else is bad? Sidetracking your sidetracks, but sometimes it’s kinda fun! So, watch out for all of those animatronic deer flying off the shelves and remember what the young folks say- “Sequels suck butts… most of the time!” Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewi

  • CTS_ep 139 Deathgasm

    10/07/2018 Duración: 01h09min

Episode 139 takes you on a trip to New Zealand. Yes, you get to hear about the comedic horror movie, “Deathgasm” (2015). Jolyon and Richard are joined by Mike C, who you might remember from the “Rare Exports” episode. Mike is a fan of and an expert on Black Metal, so you can trust his word on such a film as this. Your usual hosts are no slouches either, having been metalheads to some extent or another for decades. Yeah, you might hear a story or two. Now get out your axe and be ready to battle some demons! #horror #horrormovies #horrornerd #horroraddict #horrorjunkie #monsterkid #bmovie #scarymovies #monstermovie #podcast #chewingthescenery #zombies #zombie #VHS #movie monsters #freepodcast #denver #colorado #everdayishalloween #deathgasm #newzealand #heavymetal #milocawthorne #kimberleycrossman #jasonleihowden #horrorcomedy

  • CTS_ep 138 The Blob vs The Blob

    03/07/2018 Duración: 01h13min

Episode 138 - this is what it’s like when Blobs collide. Yes, you guessed it, your kind hosts are talking about “the Blob” (1958) and “the Blob” (1988). You could say this episode is an “Original vs Remake”, but the films each do certain things pretty well, so let’s not get all riled up! Something you may not remember is that the great Steve McQueen starred in the 1958 original. That Teen McQueen was actually 28 when they made the film, but nobody seemed to mind. One thing Steve probably minded and perhaps should have done was go for the percentage deal, but you’ll hear that story in the episode! You will also hear about the possibility that Billy Bob Thornton is actually a puppet. Or marionette…you know what we mean. Would you believe that Rob Zombie was considered for a new remake of “the Blob”? True. This episode will be the last one that Will does for a while, but you know that his chair will be ready when he gets back. Now, it’s time to run around screaming, being not believed by the cops! • CTS_ep 137 The Strangers- Prey at Night

    26/06/2018 Duración: 01h59s

Episode 137 may upset some and it may find other listeners in agreement. “The Strangers: Prey at Night” (2018) had Jolyon doing the ironing by 40 minutes in. He advised Will to watch “literally anything else”. Richard had already seen it, but Will ended up watching “The Boy” (2016), which was all right. The predictable nature of the film’s style and the fact that it borrowed from plenty of other films made it hard to get behind. One thing it has going for it is that it’s no “The Curse of the Witch’s Doll” (2018).Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. • CTS_ep136 Vampire Comedies

    19/06/2018 Duración: 01h04min

Episode 136 explores a bit of a blind spot for some horror fans- the vampire comedy. Should you say that phrase with “air quotes” around it? Perhaps, since sometimes these aren’t so funny. Your hosts give it the old college try and watch a few anyway, with mixed results. Richard shares his experiences with “Rockula” and the Mel Brooks production, “Dracula, Dead and Loving It”. Jolyon talks about “Midnight Mess” as well as one that somehow has James Corden in it. Will manages to find some value in “I Married a Vampire” but no real comedy in “Byzantium”. • CTS_ep 135 Night School (1981)

    12/06/2018 Duración: 01h07min

Episode 135 is about a 1981 slasher (?) called “Night School”. Whether you enjoy this movie or not, one thing it accomplishes is introducing Rachel Ward as a feature film star. And, while this movie is more giallo than slasher, you might find it to be more of an unflavored giallo. In getting to the featured attraction, your hosts will talk a little about how vendor life at conventions depends a lot on the hustle. Not as much about knitting or staring into your phone. There is also speculation as to how much of Haddonfield , Illinois is employed by the asylum where Michael Myers briefly resides versus the other five or so places we’ve been shown. all of this discussion may be important, but what it all comes down to is what you want from “Highlander”. • CTS_ep 134 Shin Godzilla

    05/06/2018 Duración: 01h11min

Episode 134 is about a franchise movie that really comes through. "Shin Godzilla” (2016) gives the screaming masses what they want. This list includes a giant monster, lots of urban destruction, actual miniature models where CG would just look bad, and some judicious use of CG where it truly fits. As if that isn’t enough, you get suspense, good writing and good acting. Sure, there are plenty of “Godzilla” films that just deliver on the “guy in a rubber suit stomping on miniature buildings” angle. But when you aren’t busy meditating on why there are so many dying deer in the movies lately or who the hell cast “Highlander” (1986) the way they did, give this one a look! • CTS_ep 133 REC and The Ring

    29/05/2018 Duración: 01h10min

Episode 133 is one to keep you on your toes. “Oh, because of the thrilling suspense and horror of [REC] and the Ring?” you may ask. Well, sure, there’s that. There’s also the fact that one of your hosts is in New Mexico and another of your hosts brought his wife, Emily to help host the show! After discussing some recently watched movies and sharing a few amusing anecdotes, your hosts get to a small 2007 Spanish film that went big with scares, “[REC]”. You’ll find out that there’s a Spanish equivalent to Doug Jones, with the lanky frame and long fingers. You’ll hear about how this endured some comparisons to the Blair Witch Project, which Jolyon and Emily both thought went too heavy on the motion sickness cam and snotty faces. Then a bit of talk about Richard’s mistaken watch, “The Ring” (2002). With a couple of scholars of Japanese culture, you’re sure to get a few new insights on the story! Now- load up your camera gear, make friends with some firefighters and get ready for whatever's out there! Fi

  • CTS_ep 132 Mother's Day (1980)

    22/05/2018 Duración: 01h23min

Episode 132 finds your three hosts back in the studio, talking about the Tromo-adjacent “Mother’s Day” (1980). Since this episode is several days late for the actual holiday, you might ask, “is timing important?”. Well, the short answer is "no”. The movie doesn’t have anything to do with the holiday itself and turns out to be more of a revenge story. You may consider this movie too goofy to be scary while also being too terrifying to be funny. One thing is for sure, though- it won’t likely make your “hidden gems” list. So, keep in mind that no matter where the psychotic hillbillies are from or what horrors they might inflict, they are some mother’s children. And maybe she’s just as psychotic. • CTS_ep 131 Nicholas Brendon Interview!

    15/05/2018 Duración: 19min

Episode 131 starts with wind noise and the street sounds of Nashville, but it’s worth listening. That is because Richard is talking with "Coherence" star Nicholas Brendon. Yes, yes, he also did a little show called “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, and we do get to that eventually. If it takes too long, just blame the comet. Or the altitude. The previously covered movie, “Coherence” is discussed, and you’ll get some insights. Nicky has been appearing at conventions, meeting fans and giving them lots of love. He’s also helping raise awareness for depression by bowling with fans, but don’t worry, he has them put the kiddie bumpers up! Finally, Richard talks “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with “Xander” himself and dispels any “Chandler” comparisons. It couldn’t BE any less true! #xandler will not trend! But you will hear about the time Matthew Perry came to Nicky’s house and there were no cups. You will hear about what it was like working with Joss Whedon and the brilliant John Ritter. Just remember listeners,

  • CTS_ep 130 The Ritual

    08/05/2018 Duración: 01h11min

Episode 130 is a little different. In Jolyon’s brief absence, Will and Richard welcome back a guest host, Brian to talk about a movie called “The Ritual” (2017). This movie takes you on a "lad’s trip" to a hiking trail in Sweden to memorialize a late friend. “What could go wrong?” you might ask. Well, the group has to take a shortcut due to a leg injury, which means going into the forest. Sure, you could assume that most things in the dark forest are more afraid of you than you are of them. Not this thing. Are there a lot of bad decisions aside from taking a shortcut? No, but that doesn’t mean horrific things don’t happen anyway! So, join your hosts on a trip that will be more thrilling than Brian’s motorcycle ride! Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. • CTS_ep 129 The Bloodlands

    01/05/2018 Duración: 57min

Episode 129 teaches us a good lesson. Always watch a movie a second time before recommending it to your co-hosts. At least when you like it at first because it surprises you for having exceeded your low expectations. Yes, “The Bloodlands” (2014) had some good acting, great-looking camera work and lighting, a creepy, suspenseful atmosphere, and some problems. Will wonders why you’d be a hapless boob when you could be a hapless dick? And would this movie work better with ghosts? Also- “Why’d I watch this?” Jolyon adds that the twist is that none of what you’ve watched makes sense! Richard figures that if the menaces had chosen ski masks, the movie would’ve been over in 25 minutes, with the same conclusion. If some of this sounds a little mean, just watch the movie and see where you stand! If you want to have some fun, hear more, and learn what happens when you drop a beer can into a bear trap, escape to the country and give the episode a listen! • CTS_ep 128 Stay Outta Those Woods!

    24/04/2018 Duración: 01h10min

Episode 128 is a good one for any listeners getting ready for a stay in a cabin, a tent, a vacation house…any of those places in or near the woods. That is, because your hosts are talking about some movies they recommend to set the mood for anyone wanting a good scare. If you’re pretty sure there’s not a head in the toilet and you’re a little too grown up for bullying, ridiculing or pranking, these movies might be just what you’re looking for!
