Episode 146 comes with some rules. First, you aren’t allowed to discuss “Mandy” (2018) by merely saying “it’s so batshit crazy that you just have to see it”. Although that is absolutely true, it’s worth more time and effort than that. Another rule is that if you have a band, you get five years or five albums. Deal with it. That’ll give your “farewell tour” some actual meaning! And, though “Mandy” breaks this rule, you gotta bring that movie in under 90 minutes. There are exceptions, and Nic Cage is one of them. Episode 144 is a cautionary tale about what happens when a whole bunch of dudes and just one woman board a derelict space craft traveling in the tail of a comet and find giant bats and naked people and make the decision to bring all of that back to Earth with them. You know, that old yarn. You probably recognized that as “Lifeforce” (1985). This one had Tobe Hooper directing and was rolling with a deep budget. The cast was good, the story was unique and it all got crazy even beyond the nudity. “So, how did this thing lose money?” you are bound to ask. Maybe people weren’t ready for this. Maybe Ron Howard’s “Cocoon” stole the spotlight in a more palatable way. Who knows? One thing for sure is that this movie is a fun watch and the episode ain’t half bad either! Episode 143 could have been about something terrible, but Will saved the day! Instead of a bad sequel, your hosts will instead be talking about “Only Lovers Left Alive”. This is a 2013 film by Jim Jarmusch, a favorite director of all three of your hosts! If nothing else, this film will help you pass the time until the new Nic Cage horror film, “Mandy” comes out. The featured attraction is wandering and dark, cool and disaffected, and you might say that “nothing happens”. You might also say that “the characters just go somewhere else”. Episode 140 answers the question “What do young people think of those 80’s slasher movies?”. Well, you might be wondering HOW that question gets answered and it’s pretty simple. An actual young person, Ziggy (yes, that’s her real name) joins Jolyon and Richard right after watching the first three “Friday the 13th” movies for the first time. No kidding, and she kinda binged them too! What did she think of the conspicuous absence of the hockey mask for all of the first two and part of the third movie? You’ll find out! Did she hate Shelly? Episode 138 - this is what it’s like when Blobs collide. Yes, you guessed it, your kind hosts are talking about “the Blob” (1958) and “the Blob” (1988). You could say this episode is an “Original vs Remake”, but the films each do certain things pretty well, so let’s not get all riled up! Something you may not remember is that the great Steve McQueen starred in the 1958 original. That Teen McQueen was actually 28 when they made the film, but nobody seemed to mind. One thing Steve probably minded and perhaps should have done was go for the percentage deal, but you’ll hear that story in the episode! You will also hear about the possibility that Billy Bob Thornton is actually a puppet. Or marionette…you know what we mean. Episode 137 may upset some and it may find other listeners in agreement. “The Strangers: Prey at Night” (2018) had Jolyon doing the ironing by 40 minutes in. He advised Will to watch “literally anything else”. Richard had already seen it, but Will ended up watching “The Boy” (2016), which was all right. The predictable nature of the film’s style and the fact that it borrowed from plenty of other films made it hard to get behind. Episode 134 is about a franchise movie that really comes through. "Shin Godzilla” (2016) gives the screaming masses what they want. This list includes a giant monster, lots of urban destruction, actual miniature models where CG would just look bad, and some judicious use of CG where it truly fits. As if that isn’t enough, you get suspense, good writing and good acting. Sure, there are plenty of “Godzilla” films that just deliver on the “guy in a rubber suit stomping on miniature buildings” angle. Episode 129 teaches us a good lesson. Always watch a movie a second time before recommending it to your co-hosts. At least when you like it at first because it surprises you for having exceeded your low expectations. Yes, “The Bloodlands” (2014) had some good acting, great-looking camera work and lighting, a creepy, suspenseful atmosphere, and some problems. Will wonders why you’d be a hapless boob when you could be a hapless dick? And would this movie work better with ghosts? Also- “Why’d I watch this?” Jolyon adds that the twist is that none of what you’ve watched makes sense!
