Hurricane Florence, a large and slow moving category one hurricane, made landfall during the morning of September 14, 2018.  After the eye crossed Wrightsville Beach, NC at 7:15 a.m. the storm spent the next two days producing record-breaking rainfall across eastern North Carolina and a portion of northeastern South Carolina.  Over 30 inches of rain were measured in a few North Carolina locations, exceeding the highest single-storm rainfall amounts ever seen in this portion of the state.  A station in Loris, SC recorded 23.63 inches rain, setting a new state tropical cyclone rainfall record for the state of South Carolina.  Record river flooding developed over the next several days along the Cape Fear, Northeast Cape Fear, Lumberton, and Waccamaw Rivers, destroying roads and damaging thousands of homes and businesses.  A USGS report indicated nine river gauges reported floods exceeding their 1-in-500 year expected return intervals.  Although Florence will be remembered primarily

After standing down on today’s Artemis I launch attempt when engineers could not overcome a hydrogen leak in a quick disconnect, an interface between the liquid hydrogen fuel feed line and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, mission managers met and decided they will forego additional launch attempts in early September. Over the next several days, teams will establish access to the area of the leak at Launch Pad 39B, and in parallel conduct a schedule assessment to provide additional data that will inform a decision on whether to perform work to replace a seal either at the pad, where it can be tested under cryogenic conditions, or inside the Vehicle Assembly Building. To meet the requirement by the Eastern Range for the certification on the flight termination system, currently set at 25 days, NASA will need to roll the rocket and spacecraft back to the VAB before the next launch attempt to reset the system’s batteries. Following the Artemis I pre-launch briefing, meteorologists with the U.S. Space Force Space Launch Delta 45 predict a 60% chance of favorable weather conditions at the beginning of the two-hour launch window that opens at 2:17 p.m. EDT Sept 3, increasing to an 80% chance of favorable weather conditions toward the later part of the window. The primary weather concern for the two-hour launch window remains scattered rain showers. The weather guidelines for NASA’s Artemis I flight test identify conditions to launch the agency’s Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft. Teams will continue working their way through the countdown conducting planned health checks on SLS and Orion systems. The mission management team will meet early in the morning, Saturday, Sept. 3 and give the final determination for a “go” or “no-go” decision to begin tanking operations. Artemis I is a flight test to launch NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and an uncrewed Orion spacecraft around the Moon before the Artemis II mission with astronauts aboard. The approximately two-day countdown for launch began Saturday, Aug. 27, and was waved off Monday after encountering an issue getting one of the four RS-25 engines on the bottom of the rocket’s core stage to the proper temperature range for liftoff. Weather conditions are looking favorable for Monday morning's first launch attempt of NASA's Artemis-1 mission towards the Moon. NASA hold a prelaunch media briefing following the mission management team meeting with the following participants: Jeff Spaulding, Artemis I senior NASA test director Melody Lovin, weather officer, Space Launch Delta 45 The SLS rocket is targeted to launch during a two-hour window that opens at 8:33 a.m. EDT Monday, Aug. 29, from Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy. Frying Pan Tower is located 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina and rises 135' above the Atlantic Ocean. It helps provide safety to Mariners in the Atlantic ocean, is used for environmental research and education studies, and is a shelter to a natural ecosystem for marine wildlife. Its location makes it a prime spot to observe tropical weather off the Carolina coast, including a direct hit by Hurricane Irene in 2011. Weather conditions are observed on-board by weather sensors and a live streaming webcam. In 2010, the government placed the Frying Pan Tower up for auction, with the winning bid going to Richard Neal of Charlotte, NC. Richard is our guest on this episode of the Carolina Weather Group. He joins us via video chat from the tower. The tower is powered using wind turbines and solar energy for electricity. This week, breaking news: The largest earthquakes in South Carolina since 2014 continue to rumble out of Elgin. The USGS says two earthquakes today, one a magnitude 3.5 and another 3.6, plus associated aftershocks, shook across the Carolinas, including in Columbia and reports of tremors as far away as Charlotte and Raleigh. The Carolina Weather Group's James Brierton is looking at the latest earthquake data from the USGS as more than three dozen earthquakes continue to shake South Carolina this year. We'll also dig into the Carolina Weather Group archives to hear a 2016 conversation with Steven Jaume who studies earthquakes as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at the College of Charleston. Nadia Ramlagan, North Carolina News Service Faith and climate leaders convene in Charlotte this week, as the Southeast Climate and Energy Network and US Climate Action Network join forces. They're asking the nation to pay its fair share to help communities feeling the worst effects of climate change. Rev. Michael Malcom is the executive director of the Birmingham, Alabama-based People's Justice Council. He pointed out that Black, Brown and other historically vulnerable communities are disproportionately experiencing loss and damage from climate disasters - and are the least likely to have the resources to rebuild. "All of us in the South, I would say, are aware of the effects of climate change," said Malcom, "because we are the ones that are being hit - I would say the hardest - particularly in the gulf region." GOES-18, which launched March 1 as GOES-R, is continuing operational testing ahead of becoming the United States' newest weather satellite. Part of those tests, is the transmission of its initial test imagery. Our guest this week on the Carolina Weather Group is Dr. Dan Lindsey, the Chief Scientist for NOAA's GOES-R Program. Lindsey explains the ongoing testing, where the satellite is now, and what remains before the satellite can begin monitoring the weather for the West Coast of the United States. GOES-18 will assist GOES-17 with GOES West operations in late summer 2022 and again in early fall. NOAA plans for GOES-18 to replace GOES-17 as GOES West in early 2023.  GOES-16, which launched in 2016 as GOES-R, provides weather data for the United States East Coast, including both North Carolina and South Carolina.
