  • SUFB 963: Throwback - Coral Reefs Can Have A Positive Influence On Human Health With Dr. Ellen Prager

    05/02/2020 Duración: 01h11min

Another Throwback Wednesday is upon us. The 5th episode of the Speak Up For The Ocean Blue Podcast was with Dr. Ellen Prager. She has pretty much accomplished everything of which most Marine Biologists can only dream. She's lectured, she's been the Executive Director of an Institute, she's authored papers, and she's authored novels for tweens.  I was very happy to interview Ellen on all of her accomplishments, but I was super excited for her to talk about how coral reefs can benefit Human Health. Check out the latest of Ellen's accomplishments at her website: http://ellenprager.com/ What other benefits do Coral Reefs provide? • SUFB 962: Turks And Caicos Losing Their Conch To Over-Fishing

    03/02/2020 Duración: 15min

The Turks And Caicos are overfishing their conchs and tourists are worried that they can't get their conch for dinner anymore. That was a bit sarcastic.  Unfortunately, the demand for conchs outside of the beautiful Islands of the Turks and Caicos is driving the population to extinction and people are calling for an All-Out Ban on fishing for the once plentiful mollusc. Link to the article: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-51285893 Do you think there should be a ban on fishing conch? • SUFB 960: Throwback Series - Episode 4 Talking Oceans With Alex Tilley

    29/01/2020 Duración: 57min

I am very happy to present to you Alex Tilley, who I interviewed in episode 4 about his organization called Talking Oceans. Much of our conversation covered the manner in which marine conservationists should approach helping local communities in foreign countries. We also discussed how Talking Oceans was approaching Science Communication. I was able to catch up with Alex at the International Marine Conservation Congress in Malaysia a couple of years ago, where we chatted about his new endeavors and being a father living in East Bangor. • SUFB 959: Sea-Level Rise Will Reshape The US Coastline And Increase Migration Inland

    27/01/2020 Duración: 14min

We know that Sea-Level Rise will reshape the world's coastlines physically, but it is rare that we see studies that predict how local communities will be reshaped from a socio-economic perspective. A recent study out of the University of Southern California did examine how inland counties and cities could be impacted by coastal migrants moving away from their flooded homes.  Link to article: https://phys.org/news/2020-01-sea-reshape-states-trigger-migration.html Do you live in one of the cities listed in the article? • SUFB 956: Coral Fish Attracted To Healthy Coral Reef Sound

    20/01/2020 Duración: 12min

What type of music do coral fish like? Well, a group of researchers from the University of Exeter found out recently. The researchers probably didn't play Stairway To Heaven to attract young juvenile fish to coral reefs; however, they did play the sounds of healthy reefs to attract young, vibrant fish to unhealthy reefs in hopes that it would activate something within the reef to start its way back to good health.  The noise worked because fish came to the reefs more than they did to reefs where no noise was played.  Listen to the episode to find out why, and find out what noises constitute a healthy reef. Do you think the coral reefs will recover with the newly attracted young fish? Share your thoughts in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group. 17/01/2020 Duración: 14min

Marine Conservation is all about collaboration because collaboration leads to results. This episode presents a recent case where adaptive management, collaboration among government, research institutes, and citizen science groups show great results for a Nassau Grouper aggregation in Little Cayman.  Find out how an aggregation site for Grouper spawning tripled in size within 10 years. 13/01/2020 Duración: 15min

Our Seas Coalition has called for Scotland to ban trawling within 3 miles of the coast to ensure the sustainability of fisheries for the future. The Coalition is made up of various stakeholders including marine ecotourism firms, fishing communities, salmon conservationists and others.  There are other fishing groups that oppose the ban as they feel the current system of voluntary closures and other measures will suffice.  Link To Article: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jan/05/conservationists-call-for-three-mile-coastal-fishing-limit-in-scotland Marine Conservation Happy Hour Episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/marine-conservation-happy-hour/id1358697135?i=1000461213370 I propose a marine spatial plan. • SUFB 952: Changing The Way We Label Foods And Make Them To Save The Environment

    10/01/2020 Duración: 17min

Climate Change is destroying our planet and altering our Oceans. There is no doubt about it. We need to change the way we live and we need leadership from governments and corporations to help us change.  One company is leading the charge to help us change the way we choose our food by providing carbon footprint labels on their products so you can see the impact your food has on the environment. Quorn is a company that makes meat alternative foods and wants to help its consumers make better choices in the food they choose to eat to protect the environment.  Link to article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jan/09/quorn-to-be-first-major-brand-to-introduce-carbon-labelling In keeping with the food theme for today's episode, I read another article on how one company is creating food in a lab from bacteria and water to offer a FarmFree experience.  Link to article: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jan/08/lab-grown-food-destroy-farming-save-planet Will these changes radicalize the food

  • SUFB 944: Australian Heat Wave Is Causing Mass Fish Kills In Western Australia

    23/12/2019 Duración: 11min

Australia is undergoing an unprecedented Heat Wave and it is causing mass fish kills along the Western Australian Coastline. Air Temperatures above 50C are occurring for over 5 days, which has never happened in this region since they started monitoring air temperature in 1993 via satellites.  Higher temperatures do occur during the summer, but not until mid-summer in February. Higher temperatures in December worry researchers as they have never observed these temperatures this early. Higher temperatures and mass fish kills make you wonder why more governments are not taking more Climate Change action.  I hope that protests such as the Climate Strikes will inspire more people who want action to reduce Green House Gases will run for office in the near future.
