This 1998 remake was done after Studio AIC obtained full rights to the Bubblegum Crisis property, and now they get to try to tell a complete story. As big fans of the original OVA series, it's hard not to compare the two, but we sure find the good kinds of comparisons and contrasts. From a different viewpoint character, much different music, and different story twists, it's also cool seeing what stayed the same for the Knight Sabers in both versions. We're starting with 1988's pilot OVA/first movie, My Conquest is the Sea of Stars. Two warring factions with their respective brilliant strategists who are still trying to earn the respect of their commanding officers, it's our first look at Yang Wen-Li and Reinhard von Müsel (who later becomes Reinhard von Lohengramm). We make some obvious comparisons to the Gundam, Macross, and Star Blazers franchises, appreciating the classical music after watching Princess Tutu, figuring out if these military tactics are actually brilliant or not, so much laserdisc talk, and too many mentions of skirts.
