Salinas Underground

No not Monique the comedienne, but Monique from Salinas, the 26 year old Alvarez graduate with a Masters in Poetry. We continue to find the people that make this such a great community to live in and Monique is a true gem for this city. She shares several of her poems with us and if you have spent any time in Salinas you will autimatically be transported to the places in her poetry. Instantly you become a child again and her words are so descriptive you can almost smell the air described in her poems. She is truly a great citizen of Salinas and a very talented poet.

We are back at the Cherry Bean on Oldtown Salinas for another night of open mic. Once again random strangers show up to exhibit their talent during the monthly First Fridays Art Walk. Listen and show up next month and be a part of the crowd.

In this episode we bring in the un-offical Mayo of downtown Salinas Frank Savino. Franks is the owner of Aquablue spa on the 200 block of Main St and also the chairperson of the Salinas Valley Food and Wine Festival. This year the event is going to happen on Oct. 11 and cover 7 blocks of Oldtown Salinas. Any info you need to know are in this episode plus many other interesting stories of Salinas you might not be familiar with.

This week we bring in Alvarez head coach to Salinas Underground. We talk about his expectations for next year after losing several seniors to graduation. We also talk about last years season and how they can improve on their first round CCS playoff defeat. Alisal is also brought up and, as the conversation goes whenever a rival comes up, the talk is worth a listen

If you have ever seen the movie Network, then you know where this weeks title came from. If you haven't seen it, thats ok you are in the majority and can be assured that you are not a movie nerd. In this episode Baldo does his best Howard Beale impression when he talks about the upcoming city elections. We also have another update on our burrito competition, which is growing much faster than we anticipated.

This week our guests are indie-pop band Lillie Lemon from Monterey. We talk about Lillie Lemon's, the person, start playing acoustic originals in Wisconsin coffeehouses to working with some of the most talented artists on the Central Coast. We also get to hear a couple of songs off their upcoming debut album including two live in studio. Great interview, great band, great music, great episode.

This episode was recorded at the Cherry Beans open mic event on Friday September 6, part of the Oldtown Salinas Artwalk. The 3 hour show was condensed down to under 2 hours of acoustic R&B, poetry, electric pop, and some sort of duck shaped kazoo thing. 

This is a special episode recorded at Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma. This a supershow recorded with James and Jonesy from our brother podcast Grab a Beer and Jacket. The folks at Lagunitas graciously opened their doors during their annual Blues concert and we had a great time. A great pork nacho, blues, beer filled time. 

This week we welcome in to the podcast local music producer extraordinaire Roland Lagoy. Roland has been producing music locally for as long as anyone we ask can remember. After producing music locally for years Roland tried his hand at some freelance work and now his music can be heard anywhere from video games to movies. This episode also features an introduction to a group of artists we will be working with more in the future, Moonlight Productions. They are a group of Salinas hip-hop artists dedicated to changing their community using the written word. 

Salinas Underground is back with another episode. In this episode Baldo recounts his adventure of becoming a waiter on Saturday with 6 hour notice. Also we try out a new segment called "Know Shit Idea", which promises to deliver simple solutions to lifes complicated problems. We also update you on the burrito competition we are planning plus much more madness.

Baldo, Cujo, and Posole are back with another episode of Salinas Underground! In this episode Baldo talks about Levis Stadium and its first ever sporting event, a game between the Seattle Sounders and the Earthquakes. Also he talks about the highlight of the trip, a Brazilian steakhouse in Santana Row. The guys also discuss the problem people living along the HWY 68 corridor have with venturing to Salinas and ways to bring together a very segregated city.

In this episode we migrate a couple blocks down from our home at the XL Public House to the Cherry Beans open mic event for First Fridays. This was our first time there so we kept the episode short but packed it with a bunch of great content. We also chat with Rebecca from the Midnight Thieves after her acoustic set.
