As the founder of PAMELA, Nick’s research interest focuses on the way people interact with their immediate environments with a view to improving the design of transport built environment. He also works on low-carbon technologies for transport systems. This interview explores a wide range of issues from how philosophy can influence transport decisions, how the price of bread influences mobility, to how urban developments are managed in post-conflict situations.

    Jeff Paniati's insight into transport in the United States is particularly valuable. He was Executive Director of the Federal Highways, where he was responsible for 2,900 employees in 65 offices nationwide and an annual operating budget of $400 million and is now Executive Director and CEO at the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).He led the development and implementation of the highway provisions in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) surface transportation program, including the transformative move to a performance-based federal-aid highway programme. At the start of 2016 the Fixing America’s Surface Transport (FAST) Act was introduced that gave five year funding certainty. He also reflects on how cities in the United States are changing and also competing for a prize of $40 million fund under the Smart City Challenge.     Sir Terry Morgan, Chairman of Crossrail – a £15bn project – started as an apprentice. His own experience of the value of apprenticeships is demonstrated with what Crossrail has achieved by providing people similar opportunities to enter the profession. These lessons are probably the key reason the Secretary of State, Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin, asked Terry to develop the Transport Infrastructure Skills Strategy, published in January 2016.   • Major Roads for the Future - David Quarmby

    In autumn 2014 the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund commissioned a substantial two-year Study on ‘Major Roads for the Future’ in England.
