In the United States, approximately 4200 indigenous people go missing and are murdered. All unsolved. Although it is thought these numbers are way higher due to underreporting. We will get to that over the next couple of months. But even at the official numbers, these are alarming rates. On some reservations, women experience violence and are victims of homicide at ten times the rate of women in other communities. From 1959 to 2019, there has been at least one reported hazing death every year and thirty reported hazing deaths in the years 2009 to 2019 alone. According to the Oxygen website, 95 percent of hazing survivors do not report the hazing to officials. 2020 marked the first year in the last 60 that no hazing deaths recorded. But unfortunately, since then, there have been three in the last eighteen months. All related to alcohol intoxication. The cases we will talk about today involves a murder victim or missing person who expressed fear or indicated that they were in danger just prior to their death or disappearance. They reached out to others to either ask for help or just simply state they were scared of hurt. Unfortunately, shortly after these messages were sent, the sender either vanished or were later found deceased. Break up violence is common in relationships that were physically abusive. According to the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “women in abusive relationships are about 500 times more at risk when they leave”. However, break up violence can occur even if there was no history of violence. The Ohio Violence Free Coalition has made a strong effort to inform parents about break up violence which is an ongoing issue  amongst teens and young adults. According to their studies, “a person is more likely to be seriously injured and killed after a break up. And in 20% of relationship homicides, the killing itself was the first act of violence”. It’s always shocking when it is revealed a crime was committed by a minor. When searching for their killer, investigators typically search for those who have patterns of violence and criminal activity. And while there are teens with a juvenile record, they don’t typically fit the profile of a potential murder suspect. And this is supported by statistics. In our episode on murders by strange weapons, we discussed the case of China Arnold. Arnold murdered her newborn baby by opening the microwave, placing her baby inside and then pushing the start button. She would microwave her baby for more then two minutes. Essentially cooking her daughter, Paris from the inside. 28-day-old Paris Talley would die from her injuries. And Arnold would receive a life sentence for her crime.Unfortunately, Arnold would not be the only case of parents doing the unthinkable. The Flinders Highway runs 800km, or almost 500 miles, between Townsville and Mount Isa. Between 1970 and 2018, twelve disappearances have been reported on this length of highway with only one being solved. Leading it to be more commonly known as The Highway of Death. One theory is that a thrill killer operates along the highway. Police have come across leads to support this but none have been conclusive.
