Words To Live By Podcast

On September 25, 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor was sworn in as the first female Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. 

When, in 1982, a schoolgirl asked Nancy Reagan what to do if she was offered drugs, the first lady answered, “just say no.” And with that, her campaign against drug abuse had a new name.

Today’s “Words to Live By” honors the 17th anniversary of 9-11.  We remember today not only to honor the almost 3000 innocent souls who lost their lives that day and the other 6000 people who were injured, but to send an irrefutable message to those who perpetrated this unthinkable crime that we will never forget and our resolve to continue the fight for freedom will only get stronger.   

In 1981, during his first Labor Day as President, Ronald Reagan said, “We built this great Nation, built it to surpass the highest standards ever imagined, through the hard work of our people. I would match the American worker against any in the world. The people whose labor fuels our industry and economy are among the most productive anywhere.”

Taking office in January of 1981, President Reagan got right to work in fixing these problems.  In this week’s podcast, we present President Reagan’s Address to the Nation on Federal Tax Reduction Legislation, delivered on July 27, 1981.  

On July 16, 1980, Ronald Reagan secured the nomination for the Republican Party, formally accepting the nomination at the Republican National Convention in Detroit Michigan on July 17, 1980. 

In 1985, President Reagan was asked to deliver a speech at an upcoming American Bar Association Convention.  He agreed, working with speech writers to discuss various legal issues.  But President Reagan decided to change his speech topic and instead addressed the outbreak of terrorism sweeping the world.

Ronald Reagan believed so fervently in our nation and in the goodness of its people. He strongly believed that the Fourth of July is as important a holiday as Christmas – a time for families to come together and for neighborhoods to explode with bright lights to celebrate our freedom. In this week’s podcast, in honor of the 4th of July, we look at President Reagan’s address to the nation on Independence Day, delivered on July 4, 1986.

In this week’s podcast we look at a Middle East Crisis in June of 1985.  On June 14, 1985, TWA Flight 847from Athens to Rome, with a full load of mainly American tourists, was hijacked by Shiite Hezbollah terrorists.  After releasing some women and children, the hijackers – two armed men with handguns and grenades – demanded release of Shiites held in Israeli jails or they would begin to execute the passengers.

The month of June brings us two national holidays – Flag Day and Father’s Day.  In this week’s podcast we honor these days by listening to two short radio addresses and one speech President Reagan delivered in 1984, 1985 and 1986 on these national holidays.
