Beer And A Movie

All Horror October IV begins with our Italian Horror Maestro Double Feature: Mario Bava's Bay of Blood (1971) and Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977) with guest Ronee Martinez. Ronee, wearing an Argento T-shirt and a taxidermied bat, brings her expertise as the operator of The Official Corpus Christi Horror Club.  We kick things off in bloody style with two great films and beers by 3 Nations Brewing and Peroni, the biggest beer in Italy. 

“Paul Dano is a god d@mned American treasure,” says this week’s guest Anthony Zoccolillo. We try to make a little Dumb Money, the new Dano film about the notorious 2021 GameStop stock short controversy, and explain why we paired it with Fincher’s The Social Network? We learn something new about David, Joe still hates The Ring, and Anthony {perfectly?} describes the taste profile of farmhouse ales. Dr. Horror, Kyle Ferguson, is BACK to discuss Kenneth Branaugh's latest, A Haunting in Venice, along with the 1973 Roeg CLASSIC, Don't Look Now! How did we feel about this latest spook-filled Poirot whodunnit? Did Don't Look Now's reputation live up to this first-time-viewing experience for Kyle and Joe? We save Don't Look Up's spoiler ending until the very end so buckle up, and enjoy this blood-drenched episode of BaaM!

David gets excited to review one of his favorite working directors, Kelly Reichardt's, new film, Showing Up. This quiet character set in the world of Oregon art allows us to also take a look at Tim Burton's Big Eyes (2014). Returning guest, Pamela Brouillard, brings the high intellectual takes as usual, but then shocks us repeatedly with some great drops.  Beers by Untitled Art (of course)!

See Bottoms! That's our take this week with first-time-guest Meredith Melville. But should you go back to Bottoms writer/director Emma Seligman's debut, Shiva Baby? That's a little more mixed. Two films from the same director...two beers from the same brewery. Garden Path Fermentation enters the BaaM 5-Timers Club after we enjoy their The Easygoing Drink and The Wet Hopped Ship!

We remember Paul Reubens by spending a little time down memory lane with Pee Wee's Big Adventure and guest Ethan Thompson. We try not to just do a quote-a-thon, but so...many...quotes. We pair it with Jacques Tati's titular character Monsieur Hulot as featured in Playtime.  BaaM Patron Beer Saint, Daniel Benavidez, provides us with two 14% barleywines from Weathered Souls Brewing's #BIL series, and they do their job. 

Dave, Joe and Harold remember 70s directing legend William Friedkin by diving in to two of his early films, Sorcerer and Cruising. Both were box office and critical bombs that have grown in esteem through the decades. What are our verdicts? All while enjoying two beers from Jester King and Nebraska Brewing Company. 

Dave and Joe welcome back comedian Roland Alaniz to discuss the new Will Ferrell/Jamie Foxx canine comedy, Strays, along with the 2014 Hungarian canine revenge opus, White God. Roland hosts the podcast, Sports with Roland, so we start with Sportz, a very blue gose from Turning Point Beer. The interesting sours continue in the second half with a very mochi Berliner Weisse from Parish Brewing. 

David returns to meet first-time guest Tyler Chrobocinski from the band Left Handed Knives. We ooze into a Seth Rogen co-writer/producer/voice actor double feature: TMNT: Mutant Mayhem and Sausage Party. We explore the beer named after Left Handed Knives (or was that the other way around?) from B&J's Brewpub out of Corpus Christi, TX. Films are accompanied by Ingenious Brewing and 903 Brewing.

We start a new sporadic series this week: "Our Favorite Movies." Guests Pam Brouillard and Kailey Diaz return armed, each with one of their favorite movies: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Pan's Labyrinth, respectively. We crack one from Turning Point Beer, Ingenious Brewing, and De Dolle Brouwers to get us through a very fun, sometimes deep, conversation about...our favorite movies.

Joe's kids, Hunter and Savannah, join him to discuss Barbenheimer weekend's big releases: Oppenheimer and Barbie. 

We choose to accept the mission: Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (Part One) along with a McQuarrie connection, Usual Suspects. Does the newest Tom Cruise production live up to the hype? Our second 'Raunch-com' in three weeks, we go on a Joy Ride with guest Chef Harold Ramos. We move into early Justin Lin with 2002 Sundance breakout Better Luck Tomorrow. Harold brings two Weldwerks Brewing Medianoche variants and we go nuts over the thick, barrel-aged Imperial Stout elixir. 

Dave, Joe and special guest, Sean McLain, don their fedoras and strap on their whips to travel deep into the Indiana Jones franchise. From Raiders to The Temple to the 'Last' Crusade to Crystal Skulls and into the new Dial of Destiny we snake through each film and leave no insect-covered stone uncovered. Our favorite (and least favorite) prologues, love interests, villains, action sequences, and so much more.

With the new romcom No Hard Feelings, billed as a raunchy laughfest, hitting screens, we took it as a perfect opportunity for a bit of ribaldry on the podcast this week. To pair with that, we go back to what is widely regarded as one of the greatest romcoms of all time, Billy Wilder's 1960 classic, The Apartment. Returning guest Kailey Diaz brings her always-on-point wit to the table as well as a very thoughtful present for Joe, and there is, as always, plenty of beer to go around. This week, Joe and Dave make contact with intelligent lifeforms Roland and Sarah to discuss two alien arrival films with postmodern comedy elements. First up is Wes Anderson's latest, Asteroid City, a play within a telecast within a film that features one of the most expansive ensemble casts we've seen in some time. That's followed by another film with an overflowing ensemble, the oft-derided Mars Attacks from Tim Burton, which appeared during what was otherwise widely regarded as a great run of films in the 90s. With beer from two new-to-us breweries - one being the official brewery of Mars! - this is an (inter)stellar episode that you won't want to miss!

We dive into some mindbending animation this week when we pair the second installment of Lord and Miller's Spider-Verse series with Fantastic Planet, an underground animated classic from 1973. New guest Connor Stewart joins Joe and Dave as they discuss some of the finer points of animated superheroes and sci-fi - and drink some beers from friends of the pod - this week!

It's been 50 episodes since we last stepped into the "cage," so we find ourselves there again with a selection of three films with Nicolas Cage in lead performances. Joe's pick is Drive Angry, a 2011 supernatural actioner riding the wave of 3D excitement in the post-Avatar moment in which it arrived. Dave selects Bringing Out the Dead, a relatively underperforming Scorsese vehicle that had more critical love than it did financial returns. And, of course, Carlos is back for the fun with his selection of Cage's Oscar-winning turn as a hopelessly alcoholic writer in Leaving Las Vegas. There are dark themes to explore but still a lot of fun to be had and beer to be drank on this 2023 Cage Match episode!

When our returning guest Pam Brouillard told us that she would be bringing back some beers from her roadtrip to Wisconsin, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to visit some films with Midwestern settings. Pam's instinct to go the comedy route yielded one luminary of the recent past, 2011's Bridesmaids which brought SNL's Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph to feature film success, and an even earlier film that had come together on the strength of SNL roots, 1980's The Blues Brothers. Two comedy classics and four(!) Wisconsin beers to help us sort them out. This is an episode you won't want to miss!

With Coronas in hand, we visit the Toretto Family BBQ once again to check in on what our favorite group of superhuman street racing mercenaries are up to in (the beginning of?) what is purportedly their final bow. Does Diesel finally shift to that higher gear as a thespian? Do the stunt casting cameos hit the intended sweet spots? Do cars make it back into space? We'll reveal all this and more, as well as look back at a classic car film with a climactic drag race, in this week's episode!
