To me, podcasting allows us to have an intimate conversation where you’re able to ask anything you really want. You can understand the individual better, you can hear how they grew their business, advice about life, the list goes on and on. I wanted to Interview Tom because it’s nice to interview a podcast aficionado but to learn about how to make money from being on interviews is important. As mentioned in the show, there are always pegs on a table to make it stay upright. Some of those are outreach, advertising, and PR. Podcasting is one of those PR elements that is evergreen. This entire conversation was spent talking about sales and lead generation. I tried to structure the conversation around growth because for the most part that’s what Mada speaks about. How she grew and is currently growing the company. I don’t think there’s that one piece of advice that you can take with you from this conversation. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. What I do think is extremely valuable is the ability to listen and understand themes. Mada talks about the importance of SEO, content, and even events. I had the luxury of actually going to a branch event about 4-5 years ago. It was small, it was intimate, but it freaking worked. I remembered them and I remember the swag I got because of them. It’s safe to say that typical millennial and startup norms of giving out swag may not work for some, but it did with me in this case. Learning from a professional like Brock is always inspiring. The mindset you have in order to make a billion dollar company vs the mindset you have with a 100k company or a 1 million company is just different. There are sacrifices, struggle, pain, and even triumph. In the episode Brock goes into detail about the 4 pillars you need for business success. He brought up a tracking sheet. Which is something I have been using for a few months now that I think could apply to you and your business. He talks about holding others accountable and the only way to do that is to for them to know if they are passing or failing or not. The core word to describe this episode is mindfulness. We go in pretty deep hear about this topic. Mark is an absolutely brilliant guy. You can tell how he answers things, he really goes into depth and completes a full train of thought. I know this because he’s been able to unlock a certain aspect of his brain that allows him to do this. He isn’t scattered. From what Mark mentions, he meditates daily. It’s a part of his routine. And from talking to others who meditate, it’s clear that when you’re able to understand yourself, your breathing, your purpose, your mindfulness. You allow your mind and your body to know how to function at a higher level. This young man is only 21 years old. He’s accomplished a lot and I feel like it’s just the beginning. Check it out. Luis and I met a few years ago. He was a hungry entrepreneur who wanted to make a name for himself. Penji, being a growing startup needed help in the beginning when it came to sales. At first I blew Luis off. I doubted him. But regardless of the times I said no, he still found a way to deliver value to me, answer my random questions, and be a resource for help. Now, Luis is a main resource and consultant for Penji. Some of the takeaways from this conversation is the foundation that you need to set in order to get advertising right. If you’re in the world of SAAS or sell things online, you need to invest in advertising. Simple as that. I think what Luis said was gold. Start with that. Retargeting at times can be inexpensive but are incredibly important to growth. Another takeaway was how Luis sold us on his services. He practices what he preaches. Deliver value upon value. Food education is so near and dear to my heart. I wanted to interview Marc because of that. I have this weird thing where I don’t get too star struck when it comes to celebrities, but for some reason, I’ve always had this: “OMG, hey that’s the chef at …” I’ve always said this publicly, but never on air that if I were to do something different in my life, it would surround food. Pay attention to the tail end of the conversation. If you only have 10 minutes of your day, skip to the last 10 minutes and listen to how Marc describes food and what experience means to him. You’re probably thinking, well, how does food translate to business? Your answer is on that time marker. While listening to this episode I do have to be transparent that there is a slight hesitation in Marc’s speech, so when you listen, it’s not cutting out. I love how self aware Wil is. He’s honest and he’s understanding, and he’s down to earth. If you have never heard of Wil, I’d highly recommend for you to watch his videos. I feel like his videos are more so what he’s passionate about in that day or what’s bothering him, but when he does record a video, it’s gold. In the episode he talks about a few failures he’s had and how much he loves his job. What I admire most about Wil is how he’s been able to accomplish ALL of this without VC funding. Although he won’t admit this, he did this all himself in the beginning, but has developed an amazing team that propelled Seer to the success it is today. Ren doesn’t know this, but when I first started my agency several years back, I always wanted Ren as a client. His firm was huge, they were awful at marketing at the time and their website was just ok. I knew he would be the perfect client. So I did everything I could to get a meeting with him and his team, it didn’t work out initially, but what did was a great friendship. Now fully transparent, he is a member of Penji, but what I love about Ren is his ability to want to help others. You can hear it in his voice and there’s a digital log of every time him and his company does something good within the community. He is passionate about business. He’s a straight shooter. He tells it like it is and I admire that greatly. I wanted to have Ren on the show because getting financial advice is important. A CPA or an accountant in general aren’t your enemies, they are your friends. They want to see you succeed and do what they can for you to obtain financial freedom. I’ve known Lloyd since day 1. He was that believed in me when no one else gave me a chance. He was that got me into places I sure as hell didn’t deserve to be in. He made introductions when he didn’t need to, and has been a great friend.  I’ve wanted to record this episode for a while now for many reasons. For starters, Lloyd is a world class gentleman and renaissance man. He’s good looking, smart, family focused, philanthropic, and the list goes on. I wanted to get to the root as to how he became the man he is today. His story about where he came from shaped that. The midwestern boy came from humble beginnings. This taught him a life lesson to do good and to help others. As you know about my personal background and strong beliefs about having a more diverse world, Lloyd’s story about the great lengths he takes to make sure everyone feels welcome is inspiring and I am so grateful to call him a friend and can not wait to hear about all of the lives he has saved because of his wisdom.
