In the middle of the podcast Gregg goes into a story about every day strategies that can help you accomplish more in your day. A loose quote he mentioned was something along the lines of constantly experiment, but never deviate too much. I later stormed out the house I used to call home and found myself driving back to my home without music, without sound, just me in my own thoughts. Thoughts were going through my head, anger ensued, and it came to a boiling point where I just began to break down. I couldn’t take this pressure anymore and I had to let it out. That moment for me, was probably the single greatest moment I’ve had with myself in a long time. Now you’re probably thinking, this guy is a sick bastard, and you’re probably right. I am. But what I realized was that there is beauty in pain. We all go through pain and suffering, but when it happens, we always come out better because of it. Rachel’s company is very unique. It’s solving a real problem and is on the forefront in technology in the commuter cycling industry. It’s a great company that has great values. As we progress as a society we need to explore the safety of cycling, motor and electric scooters, and various other forms of travel. After talking to Rich for over an hour talking our about business, life, faith, family. You really get an idea of what it takes to be a leader and why Virtua made the right decision to bring Rich on as their CEO over 20 years ago.  A few takeaways from the conversation is when we talked about how one day Rich had his head down while he was walking around the office. There wasn’t a particular reason why his head was down, but one of his employees came up to him and asked him if he was ok.  For me, that was a gut check and a realization that no matter what mood you are in, you have to perform at the highest level possible. That one misstep can lead others to feeling insecure about their job or you may pass that energy onto others within your executive team. Now, it wasn’t crazy turbulence, but crazy enough to warrant a little bit of stress. During the brief moments of turbulence, there were a few shrieks from those in the cabin. Some of the people were visibly stressed out because of it. I saw a few people holding each other’s hands and even someone that was constantly looking around at others with a stress face on. I’m sure you know what this means. However, there was one person in the entire cabin that didn’t have a care in the world what was going on and had absolutely ZERO stress. And that was a young child that was sitting about 3 rows from me. While almost every single person was stressed, parents including, the child was laughing, giggling, and talking to others within the cabin. The child was in the hands of the father and with every slight feeling of turbulence, the father clenched his arms to hold the baby tighter. Biggest takeaway for me was when Pia mentioned about how you need a showstopper. Which to Pia means that you are searching at around 10:30 at night and the person searching has 100 tabs open and then they stop to your website and think, holy crap. Maybe it’s just me and my inner circle, but entrepreneurship is this “cool”, “hip” thing. It’s apparently cool to brag about the money you make, or the car you drive, or the vacation you are on.  We are obsessed with this life where we have to share every waking moment of our lives in order to be relevant. Many people also believe that in order to make any sort of impact on this Earth, you have to quit your job or drop out of college to be someone important.  I’d like to tell you now that entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. It’s freaking dark. It’s lonely. The highs are really high and the lows are so freaking low that you contemplate life, the meaning, the purpose and everything in between. I’m serious. If you’re going into this world of entrepreneurship, get ready for a ride. I’d like to share how lunch in revolutionized our startup: Lunch and learns. We’ve all heard of them and I am sure we all feel a certain way about lunch and learns. However we wanted to change the negative connotation between what a Lunch and Learn was. We take education incredibly serious here at Penji. So serious, that every week we have a lunch and learn about any particular topic we choose. Each week, the administrative team nominates a fellow team member to teach something interesting during lunch. The beauty behind the words “something interesting” is that something interesting is so vague. We make sure that it’s not just about business. It can be about: A team member’s passion Their favorite foods How to cook a certain meal Arts and crafts. One in particular where we had to create a playing card for the person to our right. The reason why I wanted to interview Tom Kulzer specifically is because anytime you can have a conversation with somebody who bootstrapped a company to where aWeber’s growth is now to how it started, you have to take that person up on the conversation. So just the, the mindset is just completely different than that of like a corporate person or even an entrepreneur who has received funding. You have to be a little bit more resourceful and every dollar counts, which you can kind of hear that from the conversation. Every dollar and every penny counts for that matter. Mean you can hear that in the conversation as you, as you continue to listen. Tom also created an email newsletter in 1996 when nobody was using email newsletters. And in my opinion, I think that was kind of the catalyst to why he started a weber was seen as this opportunity in order to talk to somebody.
