YLS Update 01 30 2024
30/01/2024Thanks Nachum! Welcome back from Yeshiva break folks. February is only a few days away, which means that the playoffs are right around the corner! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we reset all leagues as we gear up for a whirlwind week to wrap up the Winter Sport Regular Seasons! Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg We'll start out by running down Varsity Hockey. Two results last night help bring a little more intrigue at the top of both divisions. In the East HANC's win over Solomon Schechter brings it to 11 wins, tied with DRS at the top. DRS will take on 4th place Rambam and 3rd place HAFTR this week, while HANC faces North Shore. All 4 teams have wrapped up playoff spots, with Magen David holding the edge for the final spot, but Flatbush and YDE can both find themselves in the hunt with sweeps and a little help from each other. Out West, TABC leads at 10-2, but will face a challenge Thursday as they play Kushner, winners of last night's contest with SA

YLS Update 01 16 2024
16/01/2024Thanks Nachum! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we cruise into winter break on a shortened week, but the playoff picture becomes more clear. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Only three hockey games on the week, all in varsity. YDE keeps themselves in the mix for the final East playoff spot, downing Solomon Schechter. Now at 5-7 the Thunder are tied with Flatbush and sit two games behind Magen David with the Warriors facing its two Brooklyn foes to end off the season. Out West, all 5 playoff spots have now been earned with Frisch knocking off Ohr Yisroel last night. This combined with SAR's win over JEC has given TABC, Kushner, the Cougars, the Sting and MTA the 5 spots out West. Where each one slots is up for grabs on the other side of the break. In Varsity Basketball, TABC and Ramaz continue their battle at the top of the West, both advance to 9-2 with wins over SAR and MTA respectively. The Storm rode 18 points from Ayd

YLS Update 01 09 2024
09/01/2024Thanks Nachum! Winter break is fast approaching and that means that playoff races are tightening up. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Magen David Basketball gains control of the Varsity East, Frisch locks up the JV Basketball West and in JV Hockey, not many games, but quality will sure make up for quantity, but first a mea culpa. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Before we begin, a correction. On last week's episode, when covering the accomplishments of Reuven Rozezadeh, I mistakenly referred to his school as Ohr Torah. As a high schooler in the late 90s and early 2000s one can certainly see where my thoughts were going, having played against OTI at several points. Rozehzadeh's play has benefitted Ohr Yisroel all year and as a token, last week's report has been re-recorded and edited, on the archives, in place of the erroneous segment. We'll start out in JV Hockey, where there were only two games this past week but both we

YLS Update 01 02 2024
02/01/2024Thanks Nachum! On the first Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of 2024, an Ohr Yisroel Senior with a day that would make Deion Sanders envious, Flatbush Basketball gets ready to put the finishing touches on both regular seasons and HAFTR hockey continues their streak with visions of home games in their sights. All that and more, straight ahead. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. It's a rarity in the Yeshiva League that you find a player who is such a major contributor on both the Hockey and Basketball courts, but when it comes to a small school looking to make runs at the playoffs for the first time in both varsity leagues, some of those days can become legendary. Such was the day for Senior Reuven Rozehzadeh of Ohr Yisroel this past Sunday. On the hockey court, Rozehzadeh nailed an "Ovech-trick," a 6- goal effort to lead the team to their 3rd win, an 8-3 victory over JEC. Ohr Yisroel finds themselves 4 points behind MTA for the final playoff spot in the West, but with an easie

YLS Update 12 26 2023
26/12/2023Thanks Nachum! We are in the last week of 2023, which means that the playoff run is about to begin for the Winter Sports season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Both Varsity Hockey and Basketball have divisions that have been thrown wide open by hard-fought battles that now leave favorites with tough matchups wondering whether home court will be theirs. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. It's certainly a noteworthy moment when you can truly feel that anything can happen in a season. For Boys Varsity hockey this year, there most definitely is the feeling that anyone can emerge as the champion of the 2023-2024 season. The latest example occurred between HAFTR and the last undefeated, DRS, this last Saturday night in HAFTR. Jonah Oliner broke a 1-1 tie early in the 3rd period and the Hawk defense stepped up to the task of knocking off the Wildcats, potentially throwing the East into chaos. While a DRS win would have given

YLS Update 12 19 2023
19/12/2023Thanks Nachum! December keeps rolling right along, and with it, the Winter sports season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, high stakes matchups in both Varsity Hockey and Basketball and undefeateds stay undefeated in JV hockey and basketball. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Varsity Hockey had a night last night as 4 of its top teams were in action. In the East, the top 2 teams, DRS and HANC met up in the Greenhouse, with at least one team guaranteed to put a mark in something other than the win column. DRS got on the board early and HANC would struggle too long to make any sort of comeback as the home team would cruise to a 4-1 win and a 9-0 record. Out West, the #2 and #3 teams Frisch and SAR squared off in Paramus. SAR took the lead in the first but could not hold it, as Tal Glassman and Eli Kahn would give Frisch the 2-1 win, tying the two teams at 6-3, right behind TABC. In other action last night, Magen David er

YLS Update 12 12 2023
12/12/2023Thanks Nachum! Chag Sameach and Happy Channukah everyone! Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we recap two of the Yeshiva League's best rivalries as Magen David and Flatbush meet up in Varsity Basketball and TABC and Frisch squared off in Varsity Hockey. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. It's barely mid-December, but already Flatbush- Magen David has cemented itself as the hottest ticket in Varsity Basketball. The two squared off in the championships of the Magen David and Cooper preseason tournaments, resulting in splits. The squads met up for the first time in regular season action this past Saturday night in Flatbush. Magen David held a 3-point lead entering the fourth quarter and would pull away at the line, running up a 20-5 spread in the final frame for a 57-39 victory. Josh Chabbot led all scorers with 15 for the Warriors who now lead the East at 7-1 after knocking Flatbush from the ranks of the undefeated. Both teams have

YLS Update 12 05 2023
05/12/2023Thanks Nachum! Welcome back everyone to another season of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update! As we enter December, we stand squarely in the middle of several extremely tight races in hockey and basketball. We'll take you through all the latest, straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg We'll start out in boys varsity basketball, where the Flatbush Falcons continue their torrid streak through the first half of the season. The Falcons upped their record to a perfect 7-0, dealing losses to SAR, YDE and DRS over the past week and now gear up for a showdown with rival Magen David this coming Motzai Shabbos. The game was set to be billed as a "Battle of the Undefeated," until Frisch changed plans this past Sunday, knocking off the Warriors 62-46 to drop Magen David to 6-1. The Cougars, themselves now sit at 6-1, having rebounded from their lone loss to Western Division-leading Ramaz last Wednesday night. In other action, the rough times continue for defending champion No

YLS Update 06 20 2023
20/06/2023Thanks Nachum! Good morning everyone! Today on an abbreviated Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we wrap up the 2022-2023 sports season. I'm Elliot Weiselberg. The final 4 championships took the field over the last 48 hours, with all diamond sports declaring winners. We'll start off with Boys Varsity Softball where an old powerhouse has reclaimed their throne. One year after a shortened first-round exit, the Hillel Heat are once again on top of the Softball world, taking out last year's champions MAY 3-1. The win marks Hillel's first since 2018 and fourth in the last 8 seasons. Contrast to that, JV Softball which saw a newcomer walk away with the top award. In only their first Yeshiva League season, Netzach HaTorah emerged victorious, blanking MAY 5-0. The Knights finished their first regular season with a record of 6-2 and outscored opponents 8-0 in their 3 playoff contests. Finally, it was quite the Sunday for Frisch, starting out with the Girls Softball

YLS Update 06 13 2023
13/06/2023Thanks Nachum! Happy 6/13 everyone! Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we wrap up the indoor season and get set for the last handful of games on the diamond, and we recap the 2023 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Boys volleyball capped off the indoor sports season as two powerhouses, SAR and Ramaz met in the finals. Ramaz, the most decorated school in boys volleyball history jumped out to a first game win 21-18 before the defending champion Sting took game 2 21-16. Game 3 would prove to be pivotal as Ramaz would take the 3 point win and then roll in Game 4 by 10 points to take home the school's third banner in the last 4 championships. Moving outdoors, the boys softball championship is set as defending champion MAY will look to repeat, but will need to go through perennial powerhouse Hillel to do so. The 2015, 2017 and 2018 champion Heat took out YDE 3-0 and wi

YLS Update 05 30 2023
30/05/2023Thanks Nachum! Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, if it seems like I'll be repeating myself for the next 4 minutes, it's really because I am. Two schools pockmark the Yeshiva League landscape this coming week, and it's nothing that we haven't already seen this year. All that and maybe more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. We start out in hockey where this update might make you think of boys in March, rather than girls in May, but Girls Hockey, will, in fact, feature a repeat of the Boys championship as Frisch and SAR will square off in Maayanot tomorrow night. Both teams advanced on shutouts, as League top seed Frisch blanked Kushner 3-0 while SAR rolled over East champion HAFTR 6-0 to square off for a championship for the second time this year. SAR will look for its second championship in a row with the girls having won last year over Heschel and its second hockey championship this year, with the boys having beaten Frisch a few months ago.

YLS Update 05 23 2023
23/05/2023Thanks Nachum! Indoor sports are semifinal ready and outdoor sports are winding down leading into the shavuos break. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, top seeds advance in Girls Varsity Soccer, but not in Boys Varsity Soccer, two shutouts highlight the girls hockey quarterfinals and a newcomer find themselves hot in the playoff mix in boys varsity softball. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. We'll start out in soccer, where, in Boys Varsity, a trio of quarterfinal contests took place Wednesday completing the round of play. The 4-5 contest lived up to the billing, going to sudden death, where Frisch outlasted host HANC 6-5 to advance to meet top seed SAR. The other half of the bracket saw West Champion TABC trounce DRS 11-3, and saw a major upset avoided as North Shore outlasted Ramaz 5-4. Both Semifinal contests, in SAR and TABC will take place tonight. In Girls Varsity, the last two semifinal spots were filled, with t

YLS Update 05 16 2023
16/05/2023Thanks Nachum! Playoff time is back in the yeshiva League and we are only a few short weeks away from crowning our Spring Champions. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, two Ramaz teams celebrate making the playoffs in entirely different fashions, a final already set in Girls JV Soccer, a major upset in Boys JV Soccer and the top seeds open up play in Varsity Soccer. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. In Volleyball, Ramaz completes the undefeated regular season, and will join SAR in the semifinals awaiting the winner of tonight's matchup between DRS and Magen David and the other quarterfinal where Flatbush will host North Shore. The Wildcats and Warriors will meet up for the second time in a week. Last week the Warriors jumped out to a 2 games to 0 advantage and were only points away from a sweep before DRS took over, won the 3rd set and held Magen David to only 8 points in each of sets 4 and 5 for the 3-2 victory. YLS Update 05 09 2023
09/05/2023Thanks Nachum! Just as quickly as Spring sports have begun, the month of May brings us within inches of the playoffs. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, JV soccer's postseason has been determined, with varsity boys and girls not too far behind, Girls Hockey has their top spot decided and Boys Softball defending champs are on the verge of locking down theirs as well. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. In Boys Soccer, the eight playoff teams have been decided with the top 3 seeds locked in. SAR, TABC and North Shore have each won their divisions and will be 1-3 in that order in the postseason. Ramaz, Frisch and HANC all took wins this past week to finish at 6-2 and depending on how the tiebreakers fall out, will place 4-6, meanwhile, DRS and Kushner finish with 10 points and know that they will either face SAR or TABC in the first round. Girls Soccer is a little more undecided, as each of the 3 division winners have finis

YLS Update 05 02 2023
02/05/2023Thanks Nachum! Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, as we enter the month of May, MAY continues their torrid run in Softball, TABC puts their undefeated record to the test in Boys Varsity Soccer and it's a two team race at the top of the West in Girls Hockey. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. In Girls Hockey, Central has risen to the top of the East with a record of 3-3 following their 1-0 shutout win over North Shore. Central now has a two point lead over the Lions and HAFTR who dropped identical 2-0 results to Ramaz and SKA to drop both teams to 2-4. Out West, Frisch, SAR, Kushner and Heschel have all clinched playoff berths. The division has become a two team race, though, as Frisch and SAR are both undefeated following Frisch's wins over Kushner and Ramaz and SAR's 5-1 win over SKA. The two will meet up next Monday night in a showdown to decide the West crown. In Boys Volleyball, the defending champs have made their

Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we welcome the diamond sports back into the mix as Softball and Baseball are in full swing, we have an early playoff position clinched in boys volleyball and a logjam in girls hockey. The three shutouts have MAY at the top of the East. Out West, three teams still have 0s in the loss column with Hillel at 3-0 after wins over MTA, TABC and SAR, Keter Torah at 2-0 and Heichel Hatorah at 2-0, following a sweep of Frisch this past Friday, which included a 15-14 barnburner in Paramus. YLS Update 03 28 2023
28/03/2023Thanks Nachum! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Saracheck Tournament caps off our Winter Sports coverage. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Twenty-four teams converged on Yeshiva University this past weekend to vie for one of the three tier championships at the 2023 Red Saracheck Memorial Basketball Tournament. Eight Yeshiva League teams were among the participants including last week's League championship combatants North Shore and Frisch. Unfortunately for both teams, neither would reach the final, however, the league was well-represented on Championship Monday. In the Tier III Championship, JEC upended Kohelet 52-42. The Thunder shook off a Day 1 loss to Fuchs Mizrachi to take victories over Maimo and Mesivta of Greater Philadelphia to reach the final. Yosef Heller took home the MVP for the Tier. Tier II saw DRS fall to that same Fuchs Mizrachi team. DRS found itself in Tier two following a qualifier loss to Magen David to begin the t

YLS Update 03 21 2023
21/03/2023Thanks Nachum! Today's JM in the AM Sports Update is dedicated in memory of my father Avraham Menashe ben Dov Be'er Halevi, on this, his 17th Yehartzeit. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update we crown our final two champions of the 2022-2023 winter season as Boys JV and Varsity basketball take center court. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. A year after championship Sunday saw four New York teams fighting for the JV and Varsity crowns, we returned to a more traditional New York-New Jersey affair. The JV matchup kicked off the afternoon with two West teams as 1 seed TABC squared off with 2nd seed Ramaz. The underdogs would hold the upper-hand for most of the contest as the Rams held 7 point leads out the 1st and 2nd quarters and would even hold a double-digit lead in the closing moments of the 3rd, paced by the inside play of Sophomore Isaac Ohayon and the hot hand from beyond the arc, Sophomore Nate Sugar who would finish the afternoon with 15 and

YLS Update 03 14 2023
14/03/2023Thanks Nachum! Happy Pie Day everyone! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, hockey crowns its champions, but nobody wanted either season to end on time, and the matchups are set for this Sunday's Boys Basketball championships. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Hockey had its turn to shine this past Sunday as hockey would actually have a Championship Sunday for the first time since 2019. However, in a twist, due to the participants, the contests would need to be played at two different venues in two different states. The JV took center stage to begin the day, as seen live on the Yeshiva Sports Network, and sponsored by the Nachum Segal Network, at Frisch as TABC and DRS, the two division champions squared off in a rematch of last year's contest. A scoreless contest through one period of play, DRS opened up the scoring early in the 2nd on a goal by Sophomore Aiden Frenkel. TABC would answer back midway through the period on a po
