YLS Update 05 10 2022
10/05/2022Good Morning Nachum! As quickly as the Spring season has come, we are on the precipice of it being over for several teams as the indoor sports enter their final week of the regular season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Ramaz continues to rise in Boys Volleyball and Girls Hockey and Frisch knocks off Heschel on the court and on the diamond to shake up the top of the divisions as we roll down the home stretch. All that and more to come! Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Ramaz and North Shore appear on a collision course at the top of the Boys Volleyball League as both stayed undefeated this past week. The Rams improved to 7-0 following a 5-set win over SAR last night, coming back from dropping the first 2 sets and needing extras to survive the third set 27-25 before taking the last two sets, leaving them a game against Frisch away from an undefeated season. 03/05/2022Good Morning Nachum! The Yeshiva League has returned from Pesach break and the calendar has turned to May, leaving just over a month and a half left of the 2022 Spring season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, two no-hitters thrown in Baseball, DRS continues to run away with Boys Soccer and the last undefeated team falls in Girls Hockey, Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg The Mets weren't the only Metropolitan area team throwing a no-hitter this past week. In fact, the Yeshiva League, saw not one, but two no-hitters on the baseball diamond. The first came Thursday night as Yehuda Speyer struck out 17 North Shore batters en route to a 9-0 JEC win over the Stars. It was the first of two wins for the Thunder on the week also shutting out DRS on Sunday. The other No-Hitter on the week came last night, as MTA's Gavriel Rudman blanked Kushner 6-0. MTA is also riding a shutout streak, as Rudman was on the mound on Friday as the Lions defeated DRS 10-0. Rudman had 12 strikeo

13/04/2022Good Morning! As we roll towards Pesach, all Spring sports have now commenced, giving us an action packed 2nd week of April to discuss. Straight ahead, on the JM in the AM Sports Update, we'll kick around some soccer scores and Hockey, Softball and Baseball are just a swing away. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. The Diamond Sports are here and all but one team in Boys Varsity Softball have thrown their first pitches. In the East, MAY and DRS have jumped out to 4-0 records, each sweeping doubleheaders with Rambam in the process. The two teams will meet at the end of April in what could be the determining factor in who takes the division. Out West 4 teams are 2-0 and will await the other side of the Pesach break to separate from each other. In Girls Softball, SKA and Ma'ayanot have jumped out to 2-0 records atop the East and West respectively. Central, HANC and Hillel are each 1-0 and four other teams have at least 1 win on the early season. In Baseball, TABC and MTA are 2-0. MTA opened

05/04/2022Good Morning! Now that the Madness of March has drawn to a close, we turn our attention to the Spring sports as we work our way down to the last few weeks of the 2021-2022 school year. Straight ahead, on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Boys Volleyball, Girls Hockey and Soccer take center court. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. The last champion of the Girls Hockey league has jumped out to the head of the pack in the early going. The Heschel Heat have opened up a 5-0 record, outscoring opponents 18-0 in the process. Heschel's final three games of the season will come in May, against perennial West division powerhouses, Kushner, Maayanot and Frisch. Out East, HAFTR has the top spot at 3-1, taking 3 in a row, including a 3-2 overtime win over Maayanot after dropping their season-opener to Heschel, 1-0. 29/03/2022Good Morning, We at the JM in the AM Sports Update join the rest of the Nachum Segal Network family in asking for your help, given recent events. The Lower East Side studio was home to many live in-person Season premieres and tournament previews, as well as the first ever edition of The Court Report. Please help support our Network and in doing so, support Nachum, who has been there to support us for so long. With absolutely no real way to segue off of that - Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Saracheck tournament wraps up the Winter sports calendar, Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. The 2022 Red Saracheck basketball tournament returned in grand fashion after a few years on the sidelines due to the Covid pandemic. 24 teams, the largest gathering, converged on Yeshiva University to rekindle the greatest weekend in Yeshiva Basketball. 22/03/2022Thanks Nachum! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, underdogs reign supreme as the 2021-2022 Winter season draws to thrilling conclusions, with more still to come! All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Boys JV Hockey and the two boys basketball leagues all wrapped up their seasons over the last seven days. We start out last Tuesday night where DRS and TABC met in Frisch for the JV Hockey championship. TABC opened the scoring in the 2nd period, on a shorthanded effort by Sophomore Shay Fields. DRS would battle back though and within a two-minute stretch, Freshman Yitzy Yudin and Sophomore Ariel Rogoff gave DRS a 2-1 lead that it would never relinquish. The championship is the first for the Wildcats on the JV level since the 2014-2015 season. 15/03/2022Thanks Nachum! The first fall champion since 2019 has been crowned, and it's a familiar face in a familiar place. We'll recap the Boys Varsity Hockey Championship and set the stage for the next week in the Yeshiva League, straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Varsity Hockey has its 2022 champion, and it just so happens to be the same team that won its last championship back in 2019, the Frisch Cougars. The West 2nd seed Frisch Cougars dominated their rivals, the West top seed TABC Storm 5-3 in BPY on Sunday night. The Cougars were able to overcome three one-goal deficits and a hat trick by Storm senior AJ Seplowitz with a team effort, putting home three goals in the final 6:13 of the game for the 5-3 victory. Senior Sam Weinberger earned MVP honors scoring two goals that bookended the Cougar effort. Junior Jacob Feit added two goals of his own. 01/03/2022Thanks Nachum! This Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update is dedicated to the memory of my father Marty, Avraham Menashe Ben Dov Be'er HaLevi on his 16th Yahrtzeit. The playoffs have arrived and boy have they produced fireworks. We'll take you through all of the week's postseason action straight ahead on this Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg Varsity Hockey starts us off with two major upsets. Last night saw West #4 SAR upend East #1 DRS on the road 4-2. Junior Gabriel Hornblass paced the Sting with 2 goals in the victory. The win for the Sting avenges a regular season embarrassment at home and will mark the third time in the last 4 varsity hockey playoffs that one of the #1 seeds did not reach the varsity semifinals and the first time that a #4 seed has defeated a #1 seed since the 2017-2018 season, when West #4 Frisch defeated East #1 DRS. 22/02/2022Thanks Nachum! Happy 2-22-22 everyone! As we roll out of President's Day, the Yeshiva League has wrapped up its Fall and Winter regular seasons. All hockey and basketball playoff matchups are set and we’ll take you through all of them straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Boys Varsity Basketball saw a potentially messy situation alleviated when Flatbush, Magen David and Waterbury each picked up wins, avoiding a possible 5-way tie for seeds 2-6. As a result of their victories over HANC, Heschel and Magen Abraham, respectively, the three teams finish at 9-5 with easy tiebreaks behind East #1 DRS. The Falcons will join the Wildcats with a bye while #3 Magen David will meet up with #6 Magen Abraham tomorrow night and #4 Waterbury will host #5 YDE. The winners of those contests will head West to meet up with either #1 SAR or #2 Ramaz. Meanwhile heading East will be the winner of tomorrow night’s contest featuring #3 TABC

16/02/2022Good Morning Everyone! It's been quite a stretch since we last brought you the JM in the AM Sports Update. Almost a full winter regular season has passed by, and with the playoffs on the horizon, now is a good a time as any to bring you up to speed on where teams stand in hockey and basketball. We'll set up the last week of the regular season and look ahead to the playoffs. All that and more, straight ahead, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Hockey's JV and Varsity East divisions have their playoffs set, while the West still has spots to be determined. In Varsity, the top 4 teams in each of the two conferences make the playoffs with the top 2 in each earning first round home games. The East will see DRS, HANC, Magen David and Rambam advance. Rambam worked their way into the postseason by overtaking Flatbush on the play of goalie Sam Korman who backstopped the Ravens to a 2-0 win over HANC and a 2-1 win over Flatbush themselves this past Sunday, knocking the Falcons from playoff position.
