Superstars will be a part of the upcoming "VAX LIVE: The Concert to Reunite the World." Jennifer Lopez, H.E.R., J. Balvin, and the Foo Fighters are just a few artists who will take part. Selena Gomez will host. According to the concert organizers Global Citizen, "VAX LIVE aims to inspire vaccine confidence worldwide and help get the COVID-19 vaccines to everyone, everywhere." The event will also serve as a fundraising event encouraging businesses and philanthropists to donate "dollars for doses" of the COVID vaccine. The concert will happen on May 8th at 8:00 pm Eastern. You'll be able to see it on multiple television networks and streaming platforms. During national Drinking Water Week (May 2-8), which recognizes the vital role tap water plays in our daily lives, WSSC Water is teaming up with restaurants in Prince Georges and Montgomery Counties that include Franklins, Founding Farmers, Cielo Rojo and Henry’s Soul Cafe to help spread awareness of the Water Fund and support local businesses. In collaboration with The Salvation Army, the WSSC Water Fund helps residential customers in financial need pay their water/sewer bills. Since the pandemic began, 3,298 individuals (1000 households) have received $441,000 in assistance from the Water Fund. 100 percent of all donations go directly to those in need. Nats fans rejoice, baseball is back in DC with fans cheering on the 2019 World Series champions. Wife of Mr. National, Ryan Zimmerman, Heather attended the Nationals game with her 3 young children on Saturday, April 17. “When you come visit them, I assure you they will be there.” Dr. Newton Howard is the brain scientist and machine enthusiast at the center of a contentious battle with his Georgetown neighbors. The scuffle centers around two life size Transformers, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, placed in front of his Prospect Street house. Neighbors complained and the ANC (neighborhood commission) tried to get them removed using a property lines violation and claiming they devalued the historic district. The giant robots are just a few blocks from Georgetown University, where he is a professor in computational neurology and functional neurosurgery. People from all over the region have come to see the statues. The joy it brings to children is one of Dr. Howard’s favorite things he shared on the Tommy + Kelly Show. Dr. Howard is not giving up. The White House Easter Egg Roll was cancelled (thanks COVID) again this year. President Joe Biden did give remarks from the South Lawn and the Easter Bunny was there. Easter Monday White House lawn activities are one of the longest traditions at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The WHEER has a special place in my heart and personal journey. It was an incredible honor to serve as the Official Emcee of the Egg Roll during the Obama Administration, a first in Egg Roll history.
 But, how about some way more historically important facts about the White House Easter Egg Roll from the White House Historical Society? In 1878 President Hayes welcome children from all around Washington to the South Lawn after their access to Capitol grounds were restricted. Congress didn’t want people on the landscaping, not like cause of why access is restricted today.
 It was President Nixon’s Administration that introduced timed Egg Roll races like we see today. Other fun dates in 1929 the WHEER was first broadcast over the radio on WRC

The eyes of the world have been on the Tidal Basin and our beautiful Cherry Trees as peak bloom hit a little early this year. Thanks to resources like the #BloomCam we're all able to enjoy the festivities from anywhere. Here's the thing about those Cherry Trees. There are 3,700 trees around the National Mall and The National Park Service replaces 90 Cherry Trees each year. Only 12 of the original 3,000 trees gifted by Tokyo in 1912 are still on the National Mall. All of the trees need year-round maintenance because visitors, weather and climate issues are tough on them. Catherine Townsend who runs the Trust for the National Mall joined us to talk about endowing a Cherry Tree. The average lifespan of a cherry tree is 40 -50 years and varies based on species, climate and care. The National Park Service (NPS) looks to the Trust for the National Mall to augment budgetary allowance to appropriately maintain the cherry trees. There is a lot of change at Nats Park this year as fans have not been in the stadium for a live game since Game 5 of the 2019 World Series. Covid safety precautions are in place including contactless tickets through the Ballpark app. All food and drink vendors are offering mobile ordering and there is of course new signage celebrating the 2019 World Series Champions.

Nadya Merdon and Mira Rizk are Seniors at Bishop O’Connell High School and on the committee for the annual Superdance. They joined us to chat about this year's event. Superdance is a fundraising 12-hour dance-a-thon sponsored by students at Bishop O’Connell HS of Arlington, Virginia. The iconic event is dedicated to raising funds for research and treatments for Cystic Fibrosis. Since its creation, Bishop O'Connell Superdance has raised more than $4,000,000 to help find a cure for CF. Superdance is a valued tradition amongst the O’Connell community, created in the hopes to find a cure for cystic fibrosis and in remembrance of several members of the O’Donnell family who died from the disease.
