Elfriede Wuckert walked up the steps of the Albina Library (now Titlewave) in the late 1920's holding her mother's hand.  Her family emigrated in 1925 from Germany and quickly became library "regulars.”  Listen to her stories of the citizenship classes her mother attended along with the memories of what it was like to be new in town and find friends in the books she carried home by the “armfuls.”  Hear what is different, but also what remains stable and familiar in the library for people new to the country.

Carolyn Main is a freelance cartoonist from Portland, Oregon, and a featured speaker of Stumptown Comics Fest 2009. She specializes in the cute, gross and bawdy world of animation, comics and graphic novels. Here she discusses her work, webcomics and the differences between publishing on the web vs. paper. Foster explores urban neighborhoods and tells their stories in her books, Portland Hill Walks and Portland City Walks, both published by Timber Press. She is also the editor of Metro's  Walk There! guidebook of 50 walks, and is working on a book about Lake Oswego, due out in 2010. She leads walks for Metro, the City of Portland, the Forest Park Conservancy and other groups. Target Audience: Adults

Oregon Reads 2009 is a community reading program that took place in nearly every public library and in every county in Oregon during the state's sesquicentennial, January through April of 2009. Apples to Oregon by Deborah Hopkinson was selected as a title for younger readers for the Oregon Sesquicentennial. In this talk, Hopkinson talks about Oregon's state symbols and what makes a writer. She also shares the stories from her books Apples to Oregon, Abe Lincoln Crosses a Creek, and the forthcoming Stagecoach Sal.

Janet Irwin is a native Oregonian and a native Washingtonian – her parents lived in Milwaukie Oregon, but she was born in Vancouver Washington.  She has a life long love of both states, especially the areas along the Columbia River. Currently Co-Host of AM Northwest, Helen Raptis has lived in the great state of Oregon since the early nineties, when she was a news reporter and anchor for KVAL-TV in Eugene.  Originally from Seattle, Helen now lives in East Vancouver with her husband David and two cats, and a return to the Rose City is in the works for the very near future.Target Audience: Adults

Oregon Reads 2009 is a community reading program that took place in nearly every public library and in every county in Oregon during the state's sesquicentennial, January through April of 2009. Bat 6 by Virginia Euwer Wolff was selected as a title for younger readers for the Oregon Sesquicentennial. In this talk, Wolff shares some of her inspirations for the book and illuminates her writing process. At the beginning of this event, a group of sixth grade girls from Metropolitan Learning Center act out a reader's theater presentation excerpted from Bat 6.

Gabriel Boehmer is a third-generation Oregonian and author of "City of Readers: The Book Lover's Guide to Portland." His essay "Trapped in America's Most Livable City" was recently published The Grove Review: A Literary Journal. He has lived in Portland, with brief escapes, since 1964.Target Audience: Adults

Formerly of KPTV's Good Day Oregon Home and Garden, David Schmitke has lived in Oregon since he started going to school at the University of Portland in 1983.  He was a news reporter at KOIN TV for several years, and met his wife, Helen, at KVAL TV in Eugene where he worked as a reporter and news anchor for eight years.  David currently lives in Vancouver, but can't wait to move back to Portland.
